Title: The Voice Behind Teresa’s Door Revealed the Truth — Part 2
I couldn’t move.
For a few seconds, all I could hear was the storm pounding against the windows.
Then the man inside whispered something that made my stomach twist.
“Adrián can’t know I’m here.”
I pressed one hand against the wall.
Adrián.
My husband.
I slowly pushed the door open another inch.
Teresa was sitting on the edge of her bed, crying.
And standing in front of her was a man I had never seen before.
He looked exhausted, soaked from the rain, and frightened.
But there was something about his face that felt strangely familiar.
Teresa noticed me first.
Her eyes widened.
“Mariana…”
The man turned.
Adrián’s voice suddenly came from behind me.
“What are you doing here?”
I spun around.
My husband stood at the end of the hallway.
He looked at the open bedroom door.
Then at the stranger.
Then at me.
And for the first time in three years, I saw genuine fear on his face.
“Adrián,” I whispered. “Who is he?”
He didn’t answer.
The stranger stepped forward.
“My name is Gabriel.”
Teresa immediately began crying harder.
Adrián closed his eyes.
“Please,” he whispered. “Not like this.”
I looked from one face to another.
“What is going on?”
Gabriel pulled a folded photograph from his jacket.
He handed it to me.
The picture showed a much younger Teresa standing beside two boys.
One was clearly Adrián.
The other was Gabriel.
My hands began shaking.
“Your husband and I are brothers,” Gabriel said.
I stared at him.
“That isn’t possible.”
Adrián finally spoke.
“It is.”
I felt the room spinning.
“Why didn’t you ever tell me?”
Teresa covered her face.
“Because I was ashamed.”
Gabriel looked at her.
“You weren’t ashamed of me. You were afraid of what would happen if the truth came out.”
I turned toward Adrián.
“What truth?”
He swallowed.
“Gabriel was involved in an accident twelve years ago.”
“I don’t understand.”
“He was blamed for something he didn’t do.”
Gabriel stepped closer.
“Your husband took the blame.”
My heart stopped.
“For what?”
Gabriel looked directly at me.
“Our father died that night.”
Silence.
Adrián lowered his head.
“I was driving.”
I stared at him.
“He was beside me. We were arguing. The car crashed.”
Gabriel’s voice cracked.
“I survived. Adrián thought I was dead.”
I looked at Teresa.
“But why did everyone believe Gabriel was gone?”
She wiped her tears.
“Because someone wanted it that way.”
The storm outside seemed to grow louder.
“Who?”
Nobody answered.
Then Gabriel said one name.
“Teresa’s brother.”
I felt a chill run through me.
“He had been stealing money from the company. Your husband’s father discovered it. After the accident, he used the chaos to make Gabriel disappear and threatened Teresa into keeping silent.”
I looked at Adrián.
“And you?”
He finally looked at me.
“I spent years trying to protect my mother and my brother.”
My voice became barely audible.
“Then why did you marry me?”
Adrián’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because I loved you.”
“Then why wouldn’t you touch me?”
He looked away.
That question had haunted me for three years.
Finally, he answered.
“Because I was terrified.”
“Of me?”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“Of having a family while knowing my past could destroy yours.”
I didn’t know whether to believe him.
Then Gabriel reached into his jacket again.
This time, he pulled out a small envelope.
“There is something else you need to know.”
He handed it to me.
Inside was a medical report.
I read the first page.
Then the second.
My hands went numb.
It wasn’t about Gabriel.
It was about Adrián.
A diagnosis.
A condition he had been hiding from everyone.
And suddenly, the three years of distance finally made sense.
But before I could ask him anything, headlights swept across the bedroom wall.
A car had stopped outside.
Teresa looked toward the window.
Her face turned white.
“It’s him.”
Adrián immediately locked the bedroom door.
“Who?”
Teresa whispered:
“My brother.”
Then someone began pounding on the front door.
Three times.
Hard.
And a man’s voice echoed through the house.
“Teresa! I know Gabriel is inside.”
Adrián looked at me.
“Whatever happens next, stay behind me.”
But I had already realized something.
The secret behind that bedroom door wasn’t the end of the story.
It was the beginning.
Because the man standing outside wasn’t coming to talk.
He had come to make sure the truth never left that house.
