THE PHOTOGRAPH REVEALED THE ONE THING LUCAS NEVER EXPECTED ME TO FIND

PART 2 — THE PHOTOGRAPH REVEALED THE ONE THING LUCAS NEVER EXPECTED ME TO FIND

For several seconds, I couldn’t move.

The photograph was taken outside the Palm Springs condo.

Lucas stood beside Melanie.

But that wasn’t what made my blood turn cold.

It was the man standing behind them.

I knew him.

My husband had told me he was dead.

My father.

I zoomed in until the image became blurry.

There was no mistake.

The man in the photograph was my father.

The father I had buried eleven years earlier.

The father Lucas had supposedly never met.

My hands began shaking for the first time.

Another message appeared.

“Don’t transfer the money yet.”

Then another.

“Your inheritance isn’t the only money Lucas has been hiding.”

I stared at the screen.

“Who are you?”

Three dots appeared.

Then disappeared.

Finally:

“Someone your husband thought would never come back.”

My heart started pounding.

I immediately searched through Lucas’s old files.

Bank statements.

Insurance documents.

Tax records.

Property records.

Anything that might explain what I was seeing.

Then I found a folder hidden beneath several innocently named documents.

The folder was password protected.

I tried our anniversary.

Nothing.

His birthday.

Nothing.

Melanie’s birthday.

Nothing.

Then I remembered something.

The password he always used when he wanted to feel clever.

His mother’s maiden name.

The folder opened.

Inside were dozens of files.

My stomach turned.

There were bank transfers.

Property purchases.

Private messages.

And photographs.

So many photographs.

Lucas hadn’t been planning this for a few weeks.

He had been preparing for it for almost three years.

The Palm Springs condo wasn’t his first secret property.

There were two others.

One in Nevada.

One in Arizona.

And then I found something that made me grip the edge of the desk.

A life insurance policy.

My name was listed as the insured person.

Lucas was the beneficiary.

The policy had been opened eighteen months earlier.

I stared at the document until the words blurred.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Then a man’s voice said quietly:

“Your husband doesn’t want you divorced.”

My blood ran cold.

“Who is this?”

“He wants you gone.”

I stood completely still.

“What does that mean?”

“It means Palm Springs was never the end of his plan.”

I heard a shaky breath on the other end.

“Melanie doesn’t know everything either.”

“Then who does?”

Silence.

Then the man said:

“Your father.”

I almost dropped the phone.

“My father is dead.”

“No,” he replied.

“He was supposed to be.”

The call ended.

I stood alone in the study, staring at the blank screen.

My entire understanding of my life had just cracked open.

My father wasn’t dead.

Lucas had known.

Melanie had known.

And somehow, all three of them were connected to something involving my inheritance.

I returned to the computer and opened one final document.

It was a scanned letter dated eleven years earlier.

The signature at the bottom belonged to my father.

I read the first sentence.

Then the second.

By the time I reached the final paragraph, I was crying.

Not because I missed him.

Because I finally understood why Lucas had spent years convincing me that my father was gone.

The last line said:

“If Lucas ever tells my daughter I am dead, she must never trust him again.”

I leaned back in my chair.

Lucas had lied about everything.

His job.

Zurich.

Melanie.

The money.

My father.

And possibly even the reason he married me.

Then another message appeared on my phone.

This time, there was no photograph.

Only an address.

And beneath it:

“Come alone. Your father is waiting.”

I stared at the address.

It was less than forty minutes from my house.

And for the first time since Lucas boarded that plane, I realized something terrifying.

He hadn’t abandoned me.

He had left me behind because he believed I would never discover the truth.

I grabbed my keys.

But before I walked out the door, I looked back at the $720,000 transfer sitting unfinished on my computer.

I smiled.

“Not today, Lucas.”

Because I wasn’t going to run away with his money.

I was going to find out exactly what he had planned to do with mine.

And when I finally opened the door to the address my father had sent me…

I discovered that Melanie wasn’t the only person waiting inside.
