PART 2 — “Mom, You Know NOTHING About Your Husband”
I locked the front door.
Then I turned back toward Sophie.
“What happened to you?”
She didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, she looked down at the baby.
“He’s safe,” she whispered.
I felt tears filling my eyes.
“Is he yours?”
She nodded.
“Yes.”
Then she looked at me.
“But Adrian isn’t his father.”
I froze.
“What?”
Sophie shook her head.
“That isn’t what you need to worry about.”
She carefully placed the baby in my arms.
Then she pulled a folded envelope from inside her coat.
“I found this after I left.”
I opened it.
Inside were copies of bank statements, photographs, and several handwritten notes.
My hands began shaking.
“What am I looking at?”
“Dad’s secret.”
I stared at her.
“Adrian wasn’t angry because I was eighteen.”
Sophie swallowed.
“He was afraid I would discover what he had been doing.”
My heart started pounding.
“What was he doing?”
“He had been taking money from accounts you didn’t know existed.”
I looked at the documents.
There were transfers.
Thousands of dollars.
Some went to unfamiliar names.
Others went to a company I had never heard of.
Sophie continued.
“When I confronted him, he told me to stay quiet.”
“And when you didn’t?”
“He told me I had to leave.”
I covered my mouth.
“So that’s why you disappeared?”
She nodded.
“I was scared.”
Then she revealed something even worse.
“I didn’t disappear voluntarily.”
I looked at her.
“What do you mean?”
Sophie explained that after Adrian forced her out, she had stayed with a friend for several weeks.
Then she discovered she was pregnant.
She knew Adrian would use the situation against her, so she kept moving between temporary places while trying to figure out what to do.
But there was another reason she had stayed away.
She had discovered that Adrian had been monitoring her.
He knew where she had been.
He knew who she talked to.
And he had even contacted someone at her workplace.
“He wanted me completely isolated,” Sophie whispered.
I felt sick.
“Why didn’t you call me?”
“I did.”
I stared at her.
“What?”
“I called you dozens of times.”
She pulled out her old phone.
There were missed calls.
Messages.
Voice recordings.
My stomach dropped.
“I never received these.”
Sophie looked at me.
“Because Dad had access to your phone.”
I couldn’t breathe.
All those nights I’d wondered why my daughter had never contacted me.
All those times I’d blamed myself.
Adrian had been controlling the information reaching me.
Then Sophie reached into the envelope again.
“There is one more thing.”
She pulled out a photograph.
It showed Adrian standing beside another woman.
They were outside the same company listed in the bank records.
I stared at the picture.
“Who is she?”
Sophie shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Then she turned the photograph over.
Written on the back was a date.
The date was three weeks before Adrian had forced her out of the house.
My hands went cold.
“What happened that day?”
Sophie looked toward the door.
“That’s when I found out what he was really planning.”
“What?”
She leaned closer.
“He wasn’t trying to get rid of me.”
“He was trying to get rid of you.”
My blood ran cold.
Before I could ask what she meant, headlights appeared through the curtains.
A car was pulling into the driveway.
Sophie grabbed my arm.
“Mom.”
“What?”
“Don’t tell him I’m here.”
The front door handle suddenly moved.
Adrian was home.
And I was standing in the living room with our daughter, her newborn baby, and enough evidence to destroy everything he had built.
Then Sophie whispered the one sentence that made me realize this wasn’t just about money anymore:
“Mom… he knows I’m alive.”
