THE TRUTH BEHIND THE 60 KILOS OF BEEF

PART 2 — THE TRUTH BEHIND THE 60 KILOS OF BEEF

The officers stood frozen in the doorway.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then one of them slowly raised his flashlight and pointed it toward the far end of the abandoned building.

What they saw was not a pile of bodies.

It was something even more unexpected.

The room was filled with large wooden crates.

Inside the crates were hundreds of old photographs, notebooks, sealed envelopes, medical records, and personal belongings.

There were children’s shoes.

Wedding rings.

Wallets.

Old family photographs.

And dozens of handwritten letters.

One officer turned toward Lidia.

“What is all this?”

The old woman lowered her head.

“My son.”

The officers exchanged confused looks.

“Your son died years ago,” one of them said.

“I know.”

“Then why did you say he was coming to dinner?”

Lidia wiped her eyes.

“Because that’s what I told myself every time I came here.”

She pointed toward the back wall.

There was a photograph hanging above the crates.

A young man smiled from the picture.

Beside him stood Lidia.

The officer stepped closer.

Then he noticed the date written underneath.

Twenty-two years earlier.

“What happened to him?”

Lidia took a shaky breath.

“My son disappeared.”

She explained that he had been twenty-three when he vanished while working near the forest.

The authorities had searched for him for months.

Eventually, the case went cold.

Everyone assumed he had died.

But Lidia never believed it.

For more than two decades, she had quietly searched for answers.

Then, three months earlier, someone sent her an anonymous envelope.

Inside was a photograph of her son standing beside the abandoned building.

There was also a single sentence:

“Look beneath the old floor.”

Lidia came to the building alone.

Beneath the floor, she discovered the hidden room.

And inside it were the belongings of people who had disappeared from the surrounding villages over many years.

The letters suggested that someone had been using the abandoned building to hide evidence.

But there was one problem.

Lidia didn’t know who was responsible.

And someone had discovered that she was searching.

That’s why she began buying enormous amounts of beef.

She wasn’t eating it.

She was using the heavy meat packages to transport supplies into the building without attracting attention.

People assumed she was simply buying food.

The blood on the floor?

It wasn’t evidence of murder.

Lidia had cut her hand badly while repairing one of the old crates.

But then an officer noticed something underneath a wooden table.

A small metal box.

Lidia immediately became terrified.

“Don’t open that.”

The officer looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because that’s what they were looking for.”

He opened it carefully.

Inside was a tiny cassette recorder and one handwritten letter.

The letter was addressed to Lidia.

Her hands began trembling as the officer read it aloud.

“Mom, if you ever find this, I’m sorry.”

Lidia covered her mouth.

The room went silent.

The letter explained that her son had discovered an illegal operation connected to several disappearances.

He had tried to report what he knew.

But before he could reach the authorities, he disappeared.

The final line was only seven words:

“I’m still alive. Don’t trust the police.”

Everyone froze.

One officer slowly looked at his partner.

Then the radio on his shoulder crackled.

A voice came through.

“Officer, we have a problem.”

“What kind?”

“The old case file you requested…”

There was a pause.

“It was accessed ten minutes ago.”

“By whom?”

Another pause.

“Your station commander.”

The officers looked at each other.

Suddenly, the entire case became much bigger than anyone had imagined.

Lidia had spent twenty-two years searching for her son.

The police had thought they were investigating an old mystery.

But now they realized someone had been watching Lidia the entire time.

And somewhere outside that abandoned building, someone already knew they had found the hidden room.

The next morning, investigators discovered that the commander had disappeared.

But before leaving, he had taken one thing with him.

The original photograph of Lidia’s son.

For the first time in twenty-two years, Lidia had proof that her son might still be alive.

And the mysterious person who had sent her the photograph?

They contacted her again that night.

Three words appeared on her phone:

“HE’S COMING HOME.”
