The Secret My Mother Had Hidden About Noah

PART 2 — The Secret My Mother Had Hidden About Noah

Mom took a shaky breath and looked at me as though she were trying to memorize my face.

“I need you to promise me something,” she whispered.

“What?”

“No matter what I tell you, you cannot judge Noah for something that happened before he was old enough to understand it.”

My heart began pounding.

“What happened?”

Mom looked toward the locked bedroom door.

“Twenty years ago, before you were born, I worked at a rehabilitation center for children and young adults.”

I stared at her.

“And Noah?”

She nodded slowly.

“I knew his family.”

My mouth fell open.

“You knew Noah before I did?”

“Yes.”

Mom wiped a tear from her cheek.

“But that’s not the part I’ve been afraid to tell you.”

She reached into her purse and pulled out a small, faded photograph.

It showed a little boy sitting beside a woman I recognized immediately.

Noah’s mother.

I looked at Mom in disbelief.

“Why do you have this?”

“Because your father and I promised his family something.”

“What?”

Mom’s voice dropped.

“That we would protect Noah if anything ever happened to them.”

I couldn’t speak.

Then she told me the truth.

Noah’s mother had been seriously ill when Noah was very young. She had worried constantly about what would happen to him if she couldn’t care for him herself.

“She asked me to make sure Noah was never treated as less than everyone else,” Mom said. “She was terrified that people would pity him instead of seeing the person he really was.”

I looked down at the photograph.

“And you kept this secret all these years?”

“Because your father made me promise.”

“Why?”

Mom’s eyes filled with tears again.

“Because your father was Noah’s biological father.”

The room seemed to tilt beneath me.

“What?”

Mom nodded.

“Your father had a relationship with Noah’s mother before we met. He didn’t know she was pregnant until much later. By then, she had already decided to raise Noah herself.”

I stared at her, completely stunned.

“Does Noah know?”

“No.”

“Does his mother?”

“She did.”

Mom squeezed my hands.

“And before she died, she asked your father never to disrupt Noah’s life unless Noah himself wanted answers.”

I could barely breathe.

Then Mom said something that changed everything.

“That’s why I was frightened when you told me you were going to prom with him.”

“Because he’s my best friend?”

“Because I knew that someday you might discover the truth.”

I looked toward the door.

“So what is your condition?”

Mom took a deep breath.

“Go to prom with Noah.”

I blinked.

“But don’t tell him tonight.”

“Why?”

“Because tonight is supposed to be about the promise you made when you were six. Not about secrets adults created before either of you understood them.”

A knock came from downstairs.

“Are you ready?” Noah called cheerfully.

I wiped my tears.

Mom stood and hugged me tightly.

“Go enjoy your night.”

I opened the bedroom door.

Noah was standing at the bottom of the stairs, holding my corsage and smiling.

“You look beautiful,” he said.

I smiled through my tears.

“And you look handsome.”

He grinned.

“Ready?”

I nodded.

“Ready.”

As we walked toward the front door, I glanced back at Mom.

She was crying silently.

But I still didn’t understand one thing.

If my father was Noah’s biological father…

why had he spent twelve years pretending Noah wasn’t part of our family?

And the answer to that question was waiting inside the old photograph Mom had hidden for twenty years.

Because written on the back were six words that made my blood run cold:

“He must never know the real reason.”
