PART 2 — What the Police Found Behind the Locked Door
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The officers stood just inside the abandoned building, holding their flashlights in front of them.
The smell was overwhelming.
Ovidiu remained outside with Lidia, who was trembling so badly that she could barely stand.
One officer turned toward her.
“Mrs. Lidia, what is in there?”
She shook her head.
“I told you… you shouldn’t have opened that door.”
The officer stepped farther inside.
His flashlight moved across the concrete floor.
There were dozens of empty meat bags.
Some were torn open.
Others had been carefully stacked against the wall.
Then his light stopped.
“Officer…”
His partner followed the beam.
Against the far wall were several large metal containers.
Every one of them was locked.
The officers immediately became suspicious.
They forced the first one open.
Inside wasn’t a body.
It wasn’t anything anyone expected.
It was food.
Hundreds of sealed packages containing meat, bread, canned vegetables, medicine, blankets, and bottled water.
The second container held something even stranger.
Old photographs.
Dozens of them.
Children.
Families.
People standing outside houses.
And in almost every photograph, someone had drawn a red circle around one particular person.
“Who are these people?” one officer asked.
Lidia finally walked inside.
Her voice was barely audible.
“People who disappeared.”
The officers turned toward her.
“What?”
She pointed toward the photographs.
“My son was one of them.”
Ovidiu stared at her.
“Your son died years ago.”
Lidia nodded.
“That is what everyone was told.”
She reached into her coat and pulled out a photograph.
It showed a young man standing beside a group of frightened people.
“My son didn’t die.”
The room became silent.
“He disappeared.”
Lidia explained that years earlier, her son had discovered a group of criminals who were exploiting vulnerable people in the region. He had tried to help them escape and had secretly created a network of safe locations.
But then he vanished.
For years, Lidia believed he was dead.
Until six months earlier, she received a letter.
There was no return address.
Inside was only one sentence:
“Mom, if you’re reading this, I’m still alive. Please don’t stop feeding them.”
That was why she had been buying sixty kilos of beef every morning.
She wasn’t feeding herself.
She was feeding people hiding beneath the abandoned building.
The police searched farther into the structure.
Behind a false wall, they discovered a narrow passage leading underground.
And there, hidden beneath the forest, were twenty-three people.
Men.
Women.
And several children.
They were frightened, exhausted, and terrified of being discovered.
One elderly man immediately recognized Lidia.
“You kept your promise,” he whispered.
Lidia began crying.
Then one of the officers noticed something on the wall.
A handwritten list.
Names.
Dates.
Locations.
And at the bottom was a name that made Lidia’s knees nearly give out.
Her son.
Beside his name were two words:
STILL ALIVE.
Lidia covered her mouth.
For four years, she had believed she was buying meat for a dead son.
But the police had just discovered evidence that he might still be somewhere out there.
And then, from somewhere deep inside the underground tunnel, they heard three slow knocks.
Everyone froze.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
One officer raised his flashlight.
“Who’s there?”
A man’s voice answered from the darkness.
“Mom?”
Lidia stopped breathing.
Because she knew that voice.
It was her son.
