PART 2 — He Opened the Suitcase… and Realized He Had Made a Terrible Mistake
For a few seconds, I couldn’t even respond.
I was standing in the kitchen with one baby crying against my shoulder, another kicking inside the bassinet, and the third finally asleep after nearly an hour of screaming.
Then I heard Corbin shout again.
“HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME?”
I took a breath.
“I didn’t do anything to you, Corbin.”
“Don’t lie!” he snapped. “I opened my suitcase, and everything is gone!”
I almost laughed.
Everything he was talking about was still there.
His expensive shirts.
His designer sunglasses.
His swimming trunks.
His favorite shoes.
But underneath them, he had found something he never expected.
The tiny handwritten notebook I had placed inside his suitcase.
On the first page, I had written:
“Two weeks. The same amount of time you said you needed to recover.”
Corbin went silent.
I had spent hours documenting what caring for three newborns actually required.
The feeding times.
The diaper changes.
The pumping schedule.
The medications.
The laundry.
The bottles.
The moments when all three babies cried at once.
And beneath everything, I had added one simple question:
“If you think I’m exaggerating, try living one day of this life.”
But that wasn’t all.
At the bottom of the suitcase, Corbin discovered three envelopes.
Each one was labeled with a date.
The first said: DAY ONE.
The second said: DAY SEVEN.
And the third said: DAY FOURTEEN.
He sounded confused.
“What are these?”
I answered quietly.
“Open the first one.”
He did.
Inside was a copy of our household expenses, the unpaid bills, and the list of everything I had been managing while he was sleeping peacefully in the guest room.
Then he opened the second.
That one contained something far more personal.
A letter.
It began:
“Dear Corbin, I hope your vacation is restful. Mine hasn’t been.”
For the first time since he left, his voice changed.
“Why did you put this in my suitcase?”
“Because you said you were too burnt out to be a father,” I replied. “So I thought you should finally understand what you left behind.”
There was silence.
Then he whispered:
“Where did you get all this?”
I looked down at our three babies.
“I didn’t prepare this to punish you.”
I paused.
“I prepared it because I needed you to understand that I can’t keep doing this alone.”
Corbin didn’t answer.
But when he finally spoke again, his voice was completely different.
“I’m coming home.”
I closed my eyes.
“Corbin… don’t come home because you feel guilty.”
“Then why should I come home?”
I looked at the three tiny faces sleeping beside me.
“Come home only if you’re ready to become the husband and father you promised you’d be.”
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then he said something I never expected.
“I think I finally understand what I’ve done.”
But Corbin didn’t know yet that the final envelope—the one marked DAY FOURTEEN—contained something that could change our marriage forever.
And when he eventually opened it…
he discovered the one decision I had made without telling him.
