Sitting at the table was Arthur Cole, Adrian’s grandfather—the man who owned the very logistics company Adrian worked for, and the ultimate patriarch of the Cole family fortune.
Beside him sat a prominent Bellmere family lawyer, with three thick folders laid out precisely on the wood surface.
Adrian dropped his suitcase, the thud echoing loudly in the quiet house. “Grandpa? What… what are you doing here?” he stammered, his beach tan suddenly looking sickly pale under the kitchen lights.
Arthur didn’t stand up. He looked at Adrian with a cold, piercing disappointment that made his grandson visibly shrink. “I came to see my great-grandchildren, Adrian,” Arthur said, his voice dropping like an iron anvil. “And instead, I found your wife on the verge of collapse, doing the work of four people while you were drinking on a beach.”
“Grandpa, it’s not what it looks like—Claire stays home, it’s her job—” Adrian desperately started, looking around the room for me.
I stepped out from the hallway, fully dressed in a sharp business suit, holding a folder of my own. I didn’t look tired anymore. I looked resolved.
“I called your grandfather three days ago, Adrian,” I said calmly, walking over to stand beside the lawyer. “Since you reminded me that I don’t have a job and haven’t earned anything, I decided to fix that. I’ve accepted a position elsewhere.”
“You can’t just leave the babies!” Adrian yelled, his voice rising in panic.
“Oh, the babies are staying right here,” Arthur interrupted, slamming his hand on the table. “And so are you. Since Claire is taking a new path, you are going to learn exactly what it takes to ‘earn’ your keep. Effective immediately, I am placing you on an unpaid, indefinite leave of absence from my company. You will stay home, and you will take care of these triplets.”
The lawyer slid the folders toward Adrian. “These are the legal separation terms, Mr. Cole. Claire has exclusive use of the house, and your grandfather is financing full-time childcare specialists to assist her—not you. You will be primary caregiver on paper, under supervision, to see if you can handle ‘not having a job’ for a change.”
Adrian looked at the paperwork, then at his grandfather, and finally at me, realizing his careless beach vacation had just cost him his career, his pride, and his freedom.
