I signed the divorce papers while six months pregnant with triplets. One year later, I entered my ex-husband’s gala beside the billionaire he could never defeat—and watched him freeze (Part 2)
Those words hurt more than shouting ever could, but they also finally shattered the last remaining piece of my naivety. I picked up the pen, signed my name on the dotted line, and walked out into the cold Manhattan rain, entirely alone.
One year later, the scene was entirely different.
The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was bathed in gold light for the annual New York Tech and Innovation Gala. Ryan stood near the center of the room, holding a champagne flute, with Savannah clinging tightly to his arm. He was smiling widely, celebrating his company’s recent public launch, basking in the attention of the city’s elite.
Then, the heavy double doors of the ballroom swung open.
The chatter in the room instantly died down. Ryan’s smile froze mid-laugh, and the color rapidly drained from his face as he stared toward the entrance.
I stepped into the room wearing a stunning, tailored emerald green silk gown, my posture radiating absolute confidence. But what truly made the entire room gasp—and what made Ryan drop his champagne glass, sending it shattering across the marble floor—was the man whose arm I was holding.
It was Julian Vance.
Julian was a reclusive, brilliant billionaire, the undisputed king of New York venture capital, and the one man Ryan had spent his entire career trying—and failing—to emulate or defeat in business.
Ryan stammered, his eyes darting frantically between me and Julian as we approached his circle. “Claire? What… what is the meaning of this? How do you even know Julian?”
Julian looked down at Ryan with a cold, dismissive look that instantly made my ex-husband look incredibly small. “Mr. Calloway,” Julian said, his deep voice effortlessly commanding the room. “You shouldn’t be surprised. Claire is the majority shareholder of Vance Enterprises’ newest global tech subsidiary. And more importantly, she is my fiancée.”
Savannah’s jaw dropped, her eyes widening in horror as she realized the woman they had cast aside was now holding the keys to the most powerful empire in the city.
“You told me our marriage had run its course, Ryan,” I said calmly, looking him straight in the eye with a serene smile. “And you were right. Because leaving you allowed me to secure a real future for my triplets—and a partner who actually understands what loyalty means. Enjoy your party. It’s the last one your company will be able to afford.”
As Julian and I walked past him toward the head table, the murmurs of the crowd rising behind us, Ryan stood frozen in the wreckage of his own pride, realizing his arrogance had cost him absolutely everything.
