THE MARK ON HER BACK WASN’T A BIRTHMARK — AND WHAT RYAN FINALLY CONFESSED TO ME CHANGED EVERYTHING

THE MARK ON HER BACK WASN’T A BIRTHMARK — AND WHAT RYAN FINALLY CONFESSED TO ME CHANGED EVERYTHING

For several seconds, nobody in that hospital room moved.

I was still holding the newborn when Melissa covered her mouth with both hands.

Ryan stood beside the bed, staring at the baby as if he were looking at something he had seen before.

Something impossible.

“Ryan,” I whispered. “What are you seeing?”

He pointed toward the small mark on her lower back.

It wasn’t large.

Just a dark, unusual shape beneath her shoulder blade that almost looked like a crescent wrapped around a tiny line.

But Ryan knew exactly what it was.

“I’ve seen that before,” he whispered.

Melissa looked at him through her tears.

“Where?”

Ryan didn’t answer.

He walked to the window and stared outside.

Then he finally said something that made my stomach drop.

“On my mother.”

I froze.

Our mother had died thirteen years earlier.

I remembered the birthmark she had near her shoulder.

But I had never thought anything of it.

Ryan turned around.

“Mom had the exact same mark.”

Melissa shook her head.

“That doesn’t mean anything.”

“It does when you know what Mom told me before she died.”

The room became completely silent.

Ryan reached into his jacket and pulled out his phone.

He opened an old photograph.

It was a picture of our mother from years ago.

He zoomed in.

There it was.

The same unusual crescent-shaped mark.

My hands began trembling.

“But how could the baby have it?” I asked.

Ryan looked at me.

“That’s what terrified me.”

He explained that months before asking me to become their surrogate, he had discovered something hidden among our mother’s belongings.

A medical envelope.

Inside was an old hospital record with a name that wasn’t ours.

A baby girl.

Born on the exact date our mother had always told us she had suffered a miscarriage.

Ryan had never understood why.

Until the day he found another document.

A handwritten note from our mother.

It contained only one sentence:

“If they ever find out what happened to her, the family will be destroyed.”

Melissa stared at him.

“Who was she?”

Ryan’s face went pale.

“I don’t know.”

“Then why are you abandoning your daughter?”

Ryan looked at the baby in my arms.

“Because I think this child wasn’t supposed to exist.”

I felt a chill run through me.

“What does that mean?”

He finally admitted that someone had contacted him two months earlier.

They claimed they knew something about our mother’s past.

They also knew Ryan and Melissa were using their final embryo.

And they warned him:

“When the baby is born, look at her back.”

Ryan had assumed it was a cruel threat.

Until he saw the mark.

Melissa began crying harder.

“You knew about this before the baby was born?”

Ryan nodded.

“And you still let my sister carry her?”

“I thought I was protecting everyone.”

I stared at my twin brother.

“You didn’t protect anyone.”

Then the hospital door suddenly opened.

A woman I had never seen before stepped inside.

She was holding an old photograph.

She looked directly at Ryan.

Then at the baby.

And whispered:

“Your mother was right.”

Ryan stopped breathing.

The woman walked closer.

“I’ve been looking for this child for almost thirty years.”

Melissa grabbed my arm.

“Who are you?”

The woman looked at her.

Then slowly answered:

“I’m the woman who knows why your mother gave that baby away.”

And before she could say another word, she placed the photograph on the bed.

I looked down.

My blood ran cold.

Because standing beside our mother in that photograph was the same woman…

holding a newborn baby with the exact same mark.

And written on the back of the photograph were four words:

“Never let Ryan know.”
