MY HOUSEKEEPER WHISPERED, “SIR, CHECK THE CAMERAS BEFORE YOU TRUST YOUR WIFE AGAIN” — THEN SHE SHOWED ME WHAT SHE FOUND
Lily locked the study door behind her.
I had never seen her look so frightened.
“Tell me what you heard,” I said.
She took a shaky breath.
“Mrs. Hale was in the kitchen with a man.”
My stomach tightened.
“What man?”
“I don’t know his name. I’ve never seen him before.”
I walked toward the desk.
“What were they saying?”
Lily looked down.
“They were talking about you.”
The room suddenly felt colder.
“What about me?”
She hesitated.
“They said you were becoming difficult.”
I almost laughed.
“I’m seventy-four, Lily. My wife has made comments about my age before.”
“This was different.”
She reached into her apron pocket and pulled out her phone.
“I recorded part of their conversation.”
My hands went still.
“You recorded it?”
“I was scared, sir.”
She pressed play.
A man’s voice filled the room.
“Once the paperwork is complete, how long until he can’t change anything?”
Then Vanessa’s voice answered.
“Not long.”
My chest tightened.
The recording continued.
“He trusts me completely,” Vanessa said. “And his children won’t suspect anything until it’s too late.”
I stared at Lily.
“Play that again.”
She did.
The man’s voice returned.
“And the house?”
Vanessa laughed softly.
“Ravenswood Estate will be mine.”
I felt as though someone had knocked the air from my lungs.
I sat down slowly.
My wife wasn’t simply tired of me.
She wasn’t making jokes about my age.
She was planning something.
“What paperwork?” I whispered.
Lily shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Then she remembered something.
“Wait.”
She pulled another item from her pocket.
A photograph.
It showed Vanessa standing beside a man outside a law office.
I recognized the building immediately.
It was the office of the attorney who had handled our prenuptial agreement.
But there was something else in the photograph.
The date.
It had been taken three months before Vanessa and I were married.
I looked at Lily.
“Where did you get this?”
“I found it in the printer room.”
She swallowed.
“Mrs. Hale printed several documents earlier tonight. One page was left behind.”
She handed me the paper.
It was a draft.
My name was at the top.
Below it was a list of assets.
My investment accounts.
My property.
My life insurance.
And beside several of them was a handwritten note:
“Transfer after incapacity.”
My hands began trembling.
“She wants to declare me mentally incompetent.”
Lily nodded.
“I think so.”
Then she whispered something even worse.
“She has already contacted a doctor.”
I looked up.
“What?”
“She asked someone to come here tomorrow morning.”
A doctor.
A lawyer.
A plan to take control of everything I owned.
Suddenly, Vanessa’s little jokes about my memory didn’t seem harmless anymore.
Neither did the questions she’d been asking me.
Where were my account passwords?
Which properties did I still manage myself?
Who would inherit what?
I had thought she was simply curious about our future.
She had been gathering information.
Then Lily said:
“There’s one more thing.”
I stared at her.
“What?”
“She wasn’t only talking to that man.”
“Who else?”
Lily’s eyes filled with tears.
“Your son.”
My heart stopped.
“Ethan?”
She nodded.
“I heard his voice.”
For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.
My son had refused to attend my wedding.
I had assumed he hated Vanessa.
But what if I had misunderstood everything?
Lily suddenly grabbed my arm.
“Mr. Bennett, you need to leave this house tonight.”
“Why?”
“Because tomorrow isn’t when they’re planning to take control of your life.”
She looked toward the study door.
“They’re planning to do it tonight.”
Before I could respond, we heard footsteps approaching from the hallway.
Slow.
Measured.
Someone stopped directly outside my study.
Then came three soft knocks.
Vanessa’s voice followed.
“Walter?”
I looked at Lily.
She was trembling.
Vanessa knocked again.
“Darling, are you awake?”
I didn’t answer.
Then the doorknob slowly began turning.
And in that moment, I realized something terrifying:
Lily hadn’t come to warn me because she had discovered Vanessa’s plan.
She had come because someone had discovered Lily was listening.
