MY BROTHER FINALLY TOLD HIS WIFE THE TRUTH — BUT MARISSA’S RESPONSE MADE HIM REALIZE HE HAD LOST FAR MORE THAN HIS MONEY
Ryan sat across from us in the hospital consultation room, his hands shaking so badly that he couldn’t keep them still.
Marissa stared at him.
“What have you been hiding from me?”
Ryan looked at me first.
I nodded.
He lowered his head.
“I lost my job eight months ago.”
Marissa blinked.
“What?”
“I was fired.”
The room went silent.
He continued.
“At first, I thought I’d find another job immediately. I didn’t tell you because I was embarrassed.”
Marissa’s eyes filled with tears.
“You let me believe you were still working?”
Ryan nodded.
“I kept pretending because I was terrified you’d look at me differently.”
“And the bills?”
“I stopped paying them.”
Marissa covered her mouth.
“Our mortgage?”
“Behind.”
“The nursery?”
“Most of it was purchased on credit.”
She stared at him as though she were seeing a stranger.
Then Ryan finally confessed the part he had been most afraid to say.
“I borrowed money from everyone I could.”
He looked toward me.
“Even Emily.”
My stomach dropped.
“I thought if the baby was born and everything looked perfect, I’d have time to fix it.”
Marissa whispered:
“So when you saw your daughter needed medical care…”
Ryan closed his eyes.
“You saw her as another expense.”
He didn’t answer.
He didn’t have to.
Marissa’s tears began falling.
“That’s why you walked away?”
“I panicked.”
“You didn’t panic.”
Her voice suddenly became firm.
“You abandoned your daughter because you were ashamed of yourself.”
Ryan began crying.
“I’m sorry.”
Marissa stood.
“No.”
She wiped her face.
“You’re sorry because you got caught.”
Ryan looked completely broken.
Then Marissa did something none of us expected.
She walked out of the room.
I followed her into the hallway.
She stopped beside the nursery window.
Their daughter was sleeping peacefully beneath the hospital lights.
Marissa pressed her hand against the glass.
“I spent seven years dreaming about this moment,” she whispered.
“I know.”
“And he nearly threw it away.”
I didn’t know what to say.
Then Marissa turned toward me.
“Emily, thank you.”
“For what?”
“For refusing to let him hide.”
I looked through the glass at the tiny baby.
“She deserves better.”
Marissa nodded.
“She does.”
Then Ryan appeared in the doorway.
Marissa looked at him for a long moment.
“I don’t know if I can forgive you.”
Ryan lowered his head.
“I understand.”
“But I’m not going to let our daughter pay for your mistakes.”
His eyes lifted.
“What does that mean?”
“It means she’s coming home with me.”
Ryan started crying.
“And me?”
Marissa took a slow breath.
“That depends on what you do next.”
She walked past him.
But before she reached the elevator, she stopped.
“Ryan?”
He looked up.
“If you ever want to be her father, stop trying to look like one.”
His face crumpled.
“Start becoming one.”
For the first time since the baby was born, Ryan didn’t argue.
He simply nodded.
But the next morning, while we were preparing for the baby’s discharge, a hospital administrator approached me.
“Emily?”
“Yes?”
She handed me an envelope.
“There was a problem with the embryo records.”
I frowned.
“What kind of problem?”
She glanced toward Ryan.
Then back at me.
“The genetic paperwork doesn’t match what was submitted when the embryo was transferred.”
My heart started pounding.
“What are you saying?”
She lowered her voice.
“We may have a serious identification issue.”
I looked through the nursery window.
Then at Ryan.
And suddenly, the question wasn’t whether he was ready to be a father.
It was whether the baby we had spent nine months believing was his…
was actually the child we thought she was.
