RYAN FINALLY TOLD MARISSA THE TRUTH — BUT THEN THE DOCTOR WALKED IN WITH A SECOND TEST THAT CHANGED WHO THE BABY REALLY WAS

Ryan stared at the floor for several seconds.

Then he finally spoke.

“I lost my job eight months ago.”

Marissa went completely still.

“What?”

“I was fired. I thought I’d find another job quickly, but I didn’t.”

She stared at him.

“Then why did you keep telling me you were working?”

“Because I was ashamed.”

His voice cracked.

“I couldn’t stand the thought of you looking at me like I was a failure.”

Marissa’s eyes filled with tears.

“And all those bills?”

“I stopped paying them.”

“The mortgage?”

“Behind.”

“The nursery?”

“Credit cards.”

She slowly shook her head.

“You let me spend seven years dreaming about this baby while you were secretly destroying our finances?”

Ryan covered his face.

“I thought once she was born, everything would somehow get better.”

Then Marissa looked toward the hallway where their newborn daughter was being monitored.

“And when you saw she might need expensive medical treatment…”

Ryan couldn’t answer.

“You thought she was going to make everything worse.”

“I panicked.”

“No.”

Marissa’s voice became frighteningly calm.

“You ran.”

Ryan looked at her.

“I’m sorry.”

“You’re sorry because I know.”

The room went silent.

I finally spoke.

“Ryan, she deserves a father who doesn’t disappear when life becomes difficult.”

He nodded through his tears.

Marissa stood.

“I don’t know if I can forgive you.”

Ryan whispered:

“I understand.”

“But I’m not taking my anger out on our daughter.”

She walked toward the door.

Then stopped.

“Ryan?”

He looked up.

“If you ever want to be her father, don’t promise me anything.”

She pointed toward the nursery.

“Prove it to her.”

Ryan nodded.

For the first time that day, he didn’t argue.

But just as Marissa reached the hallway, a doctor approached us.

“Excuse me. Are you the parents of the newborn?”

Marissa nodded.

The doctor looked uncomfortable.

“There is something we need to discuss.”

My stomach tightened.

“What happened?”

“The genetic records submitted with the embryo transfer don’t appear to match the information in our system.”

Ryan’s face changed.

“What does that mean?”

“We need to repeat the testing.”

Marissa looked confused.

“But this was our embryo.”

“That is what the original paperwork indicates.”

The doctor lowered his voice.

“But there is a discrepancy.”

Ryan stared at him.

“What kind of discrepancy?”

The doctor hesitated.

“The laboratory identification number attached to the embryo doesn’t correspond with the number listed on the transfer record.”

Nobody spoke.

Then Ryan suddenly grabbed the edge of the chair.

“No…”

I looked at him.

“What?”

He looked terrified.

“Emily… there was another couple at the clinic.”

Marissa turned toward him.

“What are you talking about?”

Ryan swallowed.

“Before the transfer, the clinic called me. They said there had been a paperwork problem.”

Marissa’s face went pale.

“And you never told me?”

“I thought they fixed it.”

The doctor immediately asked:

“Do you remember the couple’s name?”

Ryan shook his head.

“No.”

Then the doctor pulled out a file.

“We may have found it.”

He opened the folder.

My eyes dropped to the page.

There was a name.

A couple who had undergone treatment at the same clinic.

And beneath their names was a photograph.

I stared at it.

Then at Ryan.

Because the woman in that photograph looked exactly like the person Ryan had been secretly meeting for months.

The person he had told us was “just a financial adviser.”

Marissa saw the photograph too.

Her expression collapsed.

“Ryan…”

He couldn’t speak.

The doctor looked between us.

“If these records are correct, we may not be dealing with a financial mistake.”

Marissa whispered:

“Then whose baby is she?”

The doctor closed the file.

“We’ll know after the DNA testing.”

Ryan looked toward the nursery.

And suddenly, all the shame, debt, and lies we’d been discussing seemed almost insignificant.

Because there was now a possibility that the baby they had waited seven years for…

had been placed into the wrong family before she was even born.

And when Marissa demanded to know who the other couple was, Ryan finally admitted the one thing he had been hiding from everyone:

He already knew the woman’s name.
