I TURNED THE BABY OVER AND SAW WHAT RYAN HAD SEEN — BUT THE MARK ON HER BACK WAS ONLY THE BEGINNING
For several seconds, I couldn’t move.
The baby was sleeping peacefully in my arms.
Melissa was crying beside me.
Ryan stood several feet away, staring at the floor.
“What are you seeing?” I whispered.
Ryan pointed toward the baby’s lower back.
“Look.”
I carefully moved the blanket.
There was a small, dark birthmark near her shoulder blade.
It looked almost like a crescent surrounding a tiny line.
Melissa covered her mouth.
“What is that?”
Ryan’s voice barely came out.
“My mother had the same mark.”
I froze.
Our mother had died years earlier.
I remembered a small mark on her back, but I’d never thought anything of it.
“Ryan, that’s impossible.”
He shook his head.
“No. It’s not.”
Then he reached into his pocket and pulled out an old photograph.
It showed our mother holding Ryan and me as newborns.
He zoomed in on the photograph.
There it was.
The same mark.
Melissa stared at him.
“But what does that have to do with our daughter?”
Ryan looked at me.
“Everything.”
Then he told us something I had never heard before.
A few months before the embryo transfer, Ryan had found an old envelope hidden among our mother’s belongings.
Inside was a medical record.
It mentioned a baby girl.
A baby our mother had supposedly lost before Ryan and I were born.
But the record showed something strange.
The child hadn’t died.
She had been transferred to another hospital.
Ryan had spent months trying to understand what happened.
Then, shortly before the baby’s birth, someone anonymously contacted him.
The message contained only one sentence:
“When the child is born, look at her back.”
Ryan had thought it was a cruel prank.
Until that moment.
Until he saw the mark.
I stared at him.
“Why didn’t you tell us?”
“Because I was scared.”
“Scared of what?”
He swallowed.
“That this baby wasn’t supposed to be connected to our family.”
Melissa looked toward the nursery.
“She is our daughter.”
Ryan shook his head.
“I don’t know that anymore.”
Before anyone could respond, the hospital door opened.
A genetic specialist walked inside carrying a folder.
“Mr. Bennett?”
Ryan stood.
“Yes?”
“We need to speak with you about the embryo records.”
Melissa immediately stood too.
“What about them?”
The specialist looked uncomfortable.
“There appears to be a discrepancy between the embryo identification number and the transfer documentation.”
My heart dropped.
“What does that mean?”
“We’re not certain yet.”
The specialist placed the folder on the table.
“But we recommend immediate genetic testing.”
Ryan stared at the paperwork.
Then suddenly whispered:
“No.”
Melissa turned toward him.
“What?”
He looked terrified.
“There was another couple at the clinic.”
My stomach tightened.
“What couple?”
Ryan couldn’t answer.
Melissa grabbed his arm.
“Ryan, what aren’t you telling me?”
He finally looked at her.
“I recognized the birthmark because…”
He stopped.
“Because what?”
His eyes filled with tears.
“Because I’ve seen it before.”
“Where?”
Ryan looked directly at me.
“On a woman whose name was in that medical file.”
The room went silent.
Then the specialist slowly opened the folder.
Inside was an old photograph.
I looked at it.
And my heart nearly stopped.
The woman standing beside our mother wasn’t a stranger.
She was someone I had seen many times growing up.
Someone our mother had always called “an old family friend.”
Ryan looked at me.
“She isn’t a family friend.”
My voice shook.
“Then who is she?”
Ryan stared at the photograph.
“She is the woman who took our mother’s first daughter.”
Melissa gasped.
I looked down at the newborn in my arms.
And suddenly I understood why Ryan had backed away.
He wasn’t rejecting a sick baby.
He wasn’t afraid of the medical bills.
He was terrified because he believed the child in my arms might be connected to a secret our mother had buried for decades.
Then the specialist said:
“There is one more problem.”
We all looked at him.
“The embryo records indicate the genetic material may not belong to the couple who believed they created it.”
Melissa’s face went white.
Ryan grabbed the edge of the table.
And I looked at the sleeping baby.
Because suddenly, the question wasn’t why Ryan didn’t want to take her home.
The question was:
Whose daughter had I carried for nine months?
