Part 2 — My Brother Refused to Take His Baby Home… Then the Doctor Saw What Was on Her Back
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Melissa was crying.
Ryan stood beside the hospital bed, staring at the newborn as though he couldn’t recognize the child he’d spent years dreaming about.
I held the baby closer.
“Ryan,” I whispered. “What did you see?”
He pointed toward her back.
“The mark.”
I looked again.
A small, unusual birthmark stretched across the baby’s shoulder blade.
It wasn’t dangerous.
The pediatrician had already said that.
But Ryan wasn’t reacting to the mark itself.
He was staring at its shape.
Melissa wiped her tears.
“It’s a birthmark. So what?”
Ryan shook his head.
“No. You don’t understand.”
He reached into his wallet and pulled out an old photograph.
His hands were trembling.
I looked at it.
It was a picture of our mother holding Ryan as a newborn.
And there, just beneath his shoulder blade, was the exact same mark.
My breath caught.
“What does this mean?”
Ryan swallowed.
“Mom had it too.”
Melissa stared at him.
“So?”
Ryan looked toward the baby.
“Dad used to say it was a family mark.”
I felt confused.
“Then why are you refusing your daughter?”
Ryan didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at Melissa.
And for the first time, I saw genuine fear in his eyes.
“Because the doctor who examined the baby just told me something.”
Melissa froze.
“What?”
Ryan lowered his voice.
“She may not be genetically related to us.”
The room went silent.
“What are you talking about?” Melissa whispered.
Ryan explained that the fertility clinic had contacted him earlier that morning.
There had apparently been an issue with the embryo records.
The clinic wanted another genetic test before the discharge paperwork could be completed.
Melissa looked horrified.
“You knew this before you walked into this room?”
Ryan nodded.
“They called me while you were in labor.”
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
“I was scared.”
Melissa stepped backward.
“You let me think everything was fine.”
Ryan’s eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t know what to do.”
I looked down at the sleeping baby.
“Then we find out the truth.”
A specialist was called.
Additional samples were taken.
And several hours later, the doctor returned with a folder.
Everyone stood.
The doctor looked at Ryan.
“We have the preliminary results.”
Ryan’s face went pale.
“Is she mine?”
The doctor nodded.
“Yes.”
Ryan closed his eyes.
A breath escaped him like he’d been holding it for hours.
“She is genetically your daughter.”
Melissa immediately began crying again.
But then the doctor continued.
“However, there is another issue.”
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What issue?”
The doctor opened the file.
“The embryo records show that the genetic material came from a donor profile that doesn’t match the information provided to your fertility clinic.”
Ryan stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
“It means someone made an error—or deliberately altered the records.”
Melissa covered her mouth.
Ryan looked at me.
Then at his daughter.
And suddenly I understood why he’d panicked.
He hadn’t rejected his baby because of her birthmark.
He had been terrified that the fertility clinic had made a mistake that could change everything.
But then the doctor said something that made all three of us go completely silent.
“We’ve identified the original donor record.”
Ryan whispered:
“Who?”
The doctor looked down at the file.
Then back up.
“Your mother’s medical records were attached to the original genetic history.”
My heart stopped.
Our mother had been gone for years.
There was no way that could be possible.
Ryan slowly reached for the folder.
He opened the next page.
And the moment he saw the name written there…
his hands began shaking violently.
Because the document revealed a secret our mother had taken to her grave—
and it meant the little girl lying in my arms was connected to our family in a way none of us had ever imagined.
