PART 2 — THE BIKER KNEW MY SON BEFORE I DID
Marcus reached into the inside pocket of his leather vest.
I immediately stepped between him and Noah.
“Don’t come any closer.”
Marcus stopped.
“I’m not here to hurt either of you.”
“Then explain yourself.”
He looked at Noah.
My son was staring at the ground, gripping the strap of his backpack so tightly his knuckles had turned white.
Marcus sighed.
“Seven years ago, your husband gave me something.”
My heart stopped.
“My husband?”
Marcus nodded.
“Daniel.”
I hadn’t heard my late husband’s name spoken by a stranger like that in years.
“What does Daniel have to do with you?”
Marcus pulled out an old photograph.
He held it toward me.
I almost refused to take it.
Then I saw the picture.
Daniel was standing beside a motorcycle.
And beside him was Marcus.
But that wasn’t the part that frightened me.
There was a little boy in Daniel’s arms.
A newborn.
My newborn.
Noah.
My fingers began trembling.
“That picture was taken the day Noah was born,” Marcus said quietly.
I stared at him.
“That’s impossible.”
Marcus shook his head.
“No. What your husband told you about that day was the lie.”
I felt the ground shift beneath me.
Daniel had always told me he spent Noah’s birth day at the hospital.
He had said he never left my side.
But the photograph clearly showed him somewhere else.
“Why were you with my husband?”
Marcus looked toward Noah.
“Because Daniel owed me a debt.”
“What kind of debt?”
Marcus hesitated.
Then he reached into his vest again.
This time, he pulled out a small envelope.
My name was written across the front in Daniel’s handwriting.
My breath caught.
“He told me never to give this to you unless something happened to him.”
My husband had died four years earlier.
I slowly opened the envelope.
Inside was a single handwritten page.
I read the first sentence.
Then the second.
And suddenly, everything I thought I knew about my marriage began collapsing.
Daniel hadn’t been Noah’s biological father.
But that wasn’t even the biggest secret.
At the bottom of the page, Daniel had written:
“Marcus is the only man I trusted to protect my son if I couldn’t.”
I looked up at the biker.
“Why would my husband need you to protect Noah?”
Marcus’s eyes filled with tears.
Then he whispered:
“Because Noah’s real father is still alive.”
I couldn’t breathe.
And when Marcus pointed toward the school entrance, I realized we weren’t alone.
A black SUV had been parked across the street the entire time.
Someone was sitting inside.
Watching us.
Then Noah suddenly grabbed my hand.
“Mom…”
His voice trembled.
“I know that car.”
I looked at him.
“How?”
My son stared through the windshield.
Then he whispered six words that made my blood run cold.
“That man came to our house last night.”
