MY EX-HUSBAND BROKE INTO MY HOME AT SUNRISE… THEN FOUND WHAT HIS FAMILY HAD BEEN SEARCHING FOR

PART 2 — MY EX-HUSBAND BROKE INTO MY HOME AT SUNRISE… THEN FOUND WHAT HIS FAMILY HAD BEEN SEARCHING FOR

At first, I thought I was dreaming.

The sound came again.

Bzzzzzzzz.

A power drill.

Right outside my bedroom wall.

I sat upright.

For several seconds, I couldn’t understand what I was hearing.

Then came a heavy metallic clang.

I grabbed my phone and walked toward the hallway.

Another sound followed.

Someone was trying to remove my front-door lock.

I called the police.

Then I heard Ethan’s voice.

“Claire! Open the door!”

My stomach dropped.

I looked through the security camera.

There he stood.

My ex-husband.

Two men I didn’t recognize were with him.

And beside them was Vivian.

Still wearing the expensive coat she’d apparently bought before I canceled her card.

“What are you doing?” I shouted through the intercom.

Ethan looked directly into the camera.

“You’re going to give us what belongs to our family.”

I laughed nervously.

“Our divorce was finalized yesterday.”

“This has nothing to do with the divorce.”

That sentence made my blood run cold.

“What are you talking about?”

Vivian stepped forward.

“You know exactly what we’re talking about.”

“No, I don’t.”

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“Dad’s documents.”

I froze.

My father-in-law, Richard Harrington, had died three years earlier.

His estate had supposedly been divided among his children.

At least, that’s what Ethan had told me.

“I don’t have anything belonging to Richard.”

Ethan smiled.

“You’ve had it for years.”

Then one of the men beside him pulled out a crowbar.

I immediately backed away from the door.

“You’d better leave.”

Ethan shook his head.

“Not until we get the safe.”

My heart started pounding.

The safe.

There was a safe hidden behind a false wall in my study.

But Ethan didn’t know about it.

Or at least, I thought he didn’t.

I rushed into the study and locked the door.

Then I moved the painting covering the hidden compartment.

Inside was a small black safe.

I entered the combination.

The door opened.

And there it was.

The reason my father had warned me never to trust the Harrington family.

A thick blue folder.

A USB drive.

And a notarized trust agreement.

I had discovered them six months before my wedding.

My father had instructed me to keep them hidden until I was legally free from Ethan.

At the time, I hadn’t understood why.

Now I did.

I opened the folder.

The first page contained a number that made my hands shake.

$18,700,000.

But the money wasn’t in Ethan’s name.

It was mine.

My father had secretly transferred control of a multimillion-dollar investment portfolio into a trust bearing my maiden name.

The trust had one condition:

I could not access it while married to Ethan Harrington.

Because my father had discovered something about the Harrington family years earlier.

Something involving stolen company funds.

Forged signatures.

And a shell corporation Ethan had quietly used to move millions of dollars.

The divorce had triggered the release clause.

Suddenly, everything made sense.

Vivian’s spending.

Ethan’s obsession with my finances.

Their sudden desperation.

They weren’t angry because I canceled a credit card.

They were terrified because they knew the divorce had just given me control of the money they’d been trying to reach all along.

Then I heard glass shatter downstairs.

They had gotten inside.

I grabbed the folder and USB drive.

My phone rang.

It was my attorney.

I answered in a whisper.

“Rebecca?”

Her voice was urgent.

“Claire, listen carefully. I just received confirmation from the bank.”

“About what?”

“The trust has been activated.”

I closed my eyes.

“There’s something else,” she continued.

“What?”

A pause.

“Your father didn’t just leave you eighteen million dollars.”

My heart stopped.

“What do you mean?”

“The trust contains shares in Harrington Holdings.”

I stared at the documents.

Rebecca continued.

“Enough shares to make you the controlling owner.”

Then I heard Ethan shouting from downstairs.

“CLAIRE!”

I looked toward the locked study door.

And for the first time since he walked out of our marriage…

I smiled.

Because Ethan had broken into my home believing he was coming to collect what belonged to his family.

He had no idea he was standing inside the home of the woman who now controlled his family’s company.

And when I opened the study door, I wasn’t holding a weapon.

I was holding the one document that could put his entire family behind bars.
