PART 2 — MY DAUGHTER FOLLOWED MY MOM’S BOYFRIEND… AND DISCOVERED WHY HE NEVER STAYED PAST 7:30
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The briefcase sat open on my mother’s dining table.
Inside were stacks of documents, medication bottles, photographs, and several thick envelopes.
Mom’s hands were trembling.
“Harlan has a family?” she whispered.
Nadia shook her head.
“No, Grandma.”
She looked at me.
“It’s worse than that.”
I picked up the first photograph.
It showed Harlan standing beside an elderly man outside a nursing facility.
The date on the back was six months earlier.
Then I saw another photograph.
And another.
Harlan was visiting the same man every Sunday evening.
Mom stared at them.
“Who is he?”
Nadia swallowed.
“I followed Harlan after he left tonight.”
She explained that she had kept her distance as he drove south.
Eventually, he stopped outside a small assisted-living center.
Harlan carried the briefcase inside.
Nadia had followed him through the lobby.
“And that’s when I saw him.”
She pointed to the photograph.
“The man in the wheelchair.”
Mom leaned closer.
“That’s not his father.”
“No,” Nadia whispered.
“It’s Harlan.”
Mom’s face went pale.
“What?”
Nadia explained what she had discovered.
The man in the wheelchair wasn’t Harlan’s father.
It was Harlan himself—or rather, an older photograph of him after a serious accident years earlier.
He had once been involved in a devastating business collapse that left several people financially ruined.
But that wasn’t why he had been visiting the facility.
I reached into the briefcase and found a folder labeled:
LOUELLA BENNETT
My mother froze.
“Why does he have my name?”
I opened it.
Inside were copies of her financial statements.
Property records.
Insurance documents.
Even information about her retirement accounts.
Mom stepped backward.
“He’s been investigating me.”
Nadia nodded through her tears.
“I heard him talking to someone tonight.”
“What did he say?”
She looked at Grandma.
“He said, ‘She still trusts me. I just need another month.’”
Mom covered her mouth.
Then Nadia pulled out one final envelope.
“This is what scared me.”
I opened it.
Inside was a copy of a legal document.
Mom’s lakefront property was listed.
So was her house.
And beneath both properties was a handwritten note:
TRANSFER AFTER MARRIAGE.
Mom sank into her chair.
“He was planning to marry me.”
I looked at the date on the document.
Three weeks from now.
Then my phone suddenly buzzed.
Unknown number.
I answered.
Nobody spoke.
Then a man’s voice whispered:
“Don’t let Harlan know you found the briefcase.”
My blood ran cold.
“Who is this?”
The caller breathed heavily.
“You think Harlan is trying to steal your mother’s house.”
A pause.
“He is.”
Another pause.
“But that’s only the first part.”
Then the line went dead.
Mom stared at me.
“What did they say?”
Before I could answer, headlights swept across the living-room curtains.
A car had just pulled into the driveway.
Nadia looked toward the window.
Her face went completely white.
“Mom…”
“What?”
She pointed outside.
“That’s Harlan.”
Then we heard three slow knocks on the front door.
And Mom whispered the words none of us wanted to hear:
“He knows.”
