PART 2 — The Message Inside the Bus Revealed Where the Children Really Went
Lana read the sentence again.
“We never made it to Morning Lake.”
Nobody in the excavation crew spoke.
For thirty-nine years, everyone had believed the children disappeared somewhere near the lake.
But the message suggested something completely different.
The police immediately sealed the bus.
Investigators photographed every inch of the interior before moving anything.
Then they discovered something beneath the driver’s seat.
A small metal box.
Inside were fifteen photographs.
Each showed one of the missing children.
But the photographs weren’t from 1986.
They had been taken recently.
Some appeared to be only a few years old.
The final photograph stopped everyone cold.
It showed all fifteen children standing together in front of a building.
They looked older.
Much older.
The investigator stared at the image.
“If this is real, someone has been keeping them somewhere.”
Then they found a second message.
It had been scratched into the metal wall behind the last row of seats.
“Don’t trust the man who found us.”
The sheriff immediately asked who had discovered the bus.
It was a construction foreman named Walter Crane.
He had worked in the area for decades.
When investigators questioned him, he seemed confused.
“I don’t know anything about those children,” he insisted.
But Lana noticed something.
Walter kept looking toward the woods.
That afternoon, police searched his truck.
Under the driver’s seat, they found an old photograph.
It was the same building from the mysterious pictures.
And written on the back were two words:
“Pine Hollow.”
The name meant nothing to the younger investigators.
But an elderly retired police officer remembered it.
“There used to be a private children’s boarding school there,” he said. “It closed in 1987.”
Everyone froze.
The school had disappeared from local records decades earlier.
Authorities searched the old property that evening.
The buildings were gone.
Only a concrete foundation remained.
Then a police dog began barking near an overgrown cellar.
Investigators dug through the dirt.
They found a rusted metal door.
Behind it was a narrow underground corridor.
And on the wall were fifteen names.
Lana’s hands began shaking when she recognized the handwriting.
It was the handwriting of Miss Delaney.
But the names were followed by dates.
Not dates from 1986.
They continued through 1997.
Then 2004.
Then 2012.
And finally, one date from just three months earlier.
The children had apparently been alive for decades.
But there was one terrifying question.
If they had survived, where were they now?
Investigators followed the tunnel to another room.
Inside were fifteen small beds.
Dust covered everything.
Except one.
The sheets were still warm.
Someone had been there recently.
Then the sheriff noticed a cassette recorder sitting on a table.
He pressed play.
For several seconds, there was only static.
Then a woman’s trembling voice spoke.
“Lana… if you’re hearing this, I’m sorry.”
Everyone stopped breathing.
It was Miss Delaney.
“She never wanted the children to disappear,” the voice continued.
“She was trying to protect them.”
Then came a long silence.
And finally:
“The person responsible has been living among you this entire time.”
The tape clicked off.
Lana looked at the sheriff.
“Who was she talking about?”
Before he could answer, an officer came running into the room.
“Sheriff! We found another vehicle.”
Outside the abandoned property sat an old van.
Its doors were unlocked.
Inside was a stack of newspapers.
The newest one was dated that morning.
Across the front page was a photograph of the recovered school bus.
Someone had circled the headline in red.
And beneath it, written by hand, were six chilling words:
“You found the bus. Now find them.”
The sheriff looked toward the dark forest.
Then his radio suddenly crackled.
A voice came through.
Weak.
Frightened.
Almost impossible to hear.
“Help us…”
The transmission ended.
But before the radio went silent, the voice whispered one final thing:
“There are only fourteen of us now.”
