The Mail I Took From the Kitchen Proved My Mother Had Been Trapped

PART 2 — The Mail I Took From the Kitchen Proved My Mother Had Been Trapped

I didn’t open the envelopes until I reached the hotel.

I spread them across the bed, one by one.

Most were ordinary bills.

Then I found a property tax notice.

My name was on it.

So was my mother’s.

I opened another envelope.

It was from the bank.

My mother’s account had several withdrawals she didn’t recognize.

Then I found the one that made my hands go cold.

A mortgage application.

Someone had tried to use the house as collateral.

I immediately called my mother’s name.

She answered on the first ring.

“Mom, did you sign anything?”

There was a long silence.

“No.”

“Did Derek or Melissa ask you to sign papers?”

Another silence.

Then she whispered, “They told me they were helping me.”

My stomach tightened.

“Mom, what exactly did they tell you?”

“They said the house needed to be transferred temporarily so they could protect it from taxes.”

I closed my eyes.

They had been trying to take the house.

The house I had spent six years working overseas to buy for her.

The next morning, I returned.

Melissa opened the door.

Her smile disappeared when she saw me.

“You’re back?”

“I forgot something.”

She stepped aside.

I walked directly toward the kitchen.

My mother was standing there washing dishes.

I took the sponge from her hand.

“Mom, sit down.”

Derek entered a moment later.

“What is going on?”

I placed the mortgage application on the table.

“Who signed this?”

His face changed.

Melissa quickly stepped forward.

“We were only trying to help your mother.”

“Then why did she never know about it?”

Neither answered.

I pulled out the original property documents.

Derek stared at them.

“You don’t understand how these things work.”

I smiled.

“Oh, I understand perfectly.”

I placed the deed on the table.

“The house belongs to me.”

The room went silent.

Melissa looked at Derek.

“You said it was yours.”

Derek’s face turned red.

“I thought it would eventually be mine.”

My mother started crying.

“Iris, I tried to tell you.”

I hugged her.

“You don’t have to explain anything.”

Then I noticed something on her wrist.

A dark mark.

“What happened?”

She pulled her sleeve down.

“Nothing.”

“Mom.”

She finally broke down.

“Melissa grabbed me when I refused to sign the papers.”

I felt something inside me go completely still.

I looked at my sister-in-law.

“You touched my mother?”

She didn’t answer.

That afternoon, I contacted an attorney.

We discovered that Derek and Melissa had been using my mother’s name to redirect bills, access her accounts, and negotiate a potential sale of the property.

But they had made one enormous mistake.

They had left a paper trail.

The opened mail I had taken from the kitchen wasn’t just evidence.

It was proof.

Within days, their access to my mother’s finances was terminated.

The attempted property transfer was stopped.

And Derek and Melissa were ordered to leave the house.

But I wasn’t finished.

I walked upstairs and opened the master bedroom door.

My mother stood behind me.

“Mom.”

“Yes?”

“This room is yours.”

She stared at me.

“But where will you sleep?”

I smiled.

“Anywhere. As long as you’re safe.”

She began crying.

I helped her move her things upstairs.

Then I removed the tiny cot beside the washing machine and carried it outside.

That night, my mother slept in the room she had once believed she would never be allowed to enter.

Before going to bed, she looked at the wedding photograph of my father and her.

Then she whispered,

“Your daughter came home.”

I kissed her forehead.

“I should have come sooner.”

She shook her head.

“You came when I needed you.”

The next morning, Derek called.

His voice sounded different.

Not angry.

Afraid.

“Iris, can we talk?”

“What about?”

“Dad left something behind.”

I froze.

“What?”

Derek hesitated.

“A letter.”

“What letter?”

“It was addressed to you.”

My heart began pounding.

“Where is it?”

“I have it.”

He swallowed.

“And Iris… you need to read it before you decide what to do with us.”

I stared at the phone.

Because suddenly I realized something terrifying.

The house wasn’t the only thing my father had left behind.

And whatever was written in that letter…

could change everything I thought I knew about my family.
