PART 2 — “Well, Isn’t That Nice?” Wasn’t the Answer She Expected
The second woman smiled sweetly and leaned back in her chair.
“When my first child was born,” she said, “my husband gave me a beautiful little house in the country.”
The first woman raised an eyebrow.
“Oh, how lovely.”
The second woman nodded.
“Well, isn’t that nice?”
The first woman smiled, then continued.
“And what did he give you when your second child was born?”
The second woman took a slow sip of her iced tea.
“He gave me a brand-new Cadillac.”
The first woman’s eyes widened.
“Well, isn’t that nice!”
The second woman smiled.
“And when my third child was born?”
The first woman leaned forward eagerly.
“What did he give you then?”
The second woman paused dramatically.
“He gave me something far more valuable than a mansion, a Cadillac, or a diamond bracelet.”
The first woman nearly jumped out of her chair.
“What was it?”
The second woman smiled and said:
“A divorce.”
The first woman blinked.
“A divorce?”
“Yes,” she replied.
“And you think that’s more valuable than all those expensive gifts?”
The second woman laughed.
“Absolutely.”
“Why?”
“Because now I get to keep the house, the Cadillac, the jewelry…”
She paused and took another sip of tea.
“…and I don’t have to listen to him brag about how much they cost anymore.”
For the first time, the two women sat quietly.
Then the first woman burst out laughing.
“Well, isn’t THAT nice!”
And from the other side of the porch came an unexpected voice.
Their elderly housekeeper had been listening the entire time.
She looked up from sweeping the steps and said:
“Ladies, if either of your husbands is giving away divorces…”
She smiled.
“Tell them I have a daughter who could use one.”
The porch exploded with laughter.
