Six Days After My Son Was Born, I Opened the Burgundy Binder… and My Husband Finally Stopped Smiling

PART 2 — Six Days After My Son Was Born, I Opened the Burgundy Binder… and My Husband Finally Stopped Smiling

The courtroom became completely silent.

Judge Fenwick looked at Cordelia.

“You witnessed this document?”

Cordelia straightened in her chair.

“I was simply helping my son protect his family.”

“By witnessing a document that could give him sole custody of a newborn?”

Her lips tightened.

“I believed Mrs. Ashcombe was unstable.”

I looked at her.

“You never asked me.”

She didn’t answer.

Desmond suddenly leaned toward his attorney and whispered something.

Judge Fenwick noticed.

“Mr. Ashcombe, your attorney can speak when I ask him to.”

Desmond sat back.

For the first time that morning, he looked nervous.

I turned another page in the binder.

“This is why I brought the medical records.”

The clerk took the documents.

They showed every prenatal appointment.

Every blood pressure reading.

Every note from my obstetrician.

And most importantly, the final medical assessment.

Dr. Anand had written that I was medically stable and fully capable of caring for my newborn.

Judge Fenwick looked directly at Desmond.

“Your petition suggests your wife was medically or emotionally incapable of caring for the child.”

“That wasn’t exactly what I meant,” he said.

“Then what exactly did you mean?”

He couldn’t answer.

I opened the next section.

This one was labeled:

COMMUNICATIONS BETWEEN DESMOND ASHCOMBE AND PRISCILLA VANE.

The woman sitting behind him suddenly stopped breathing.

Judge Fenwick looked at me.

“Who is Ms. Vane?”

Desmond immediately interrupted.

“She has nothing to do with this case.”

I looked toward Priscilla.

Then back at the judge.

“She does.”

I handed the clerk a printed message.

It was dated two weeks before Callum’s birth.

Priscilla had written:

Once the baby arrives, she’ll be too exhausted to fight you.

Desmond replied:

That’s the plan.

A murmur moved through the courtroom.

Cordelia stared at her son.

“Desmond…”

He shook his head.

“Those messages are being taken out of context.”

I turned another page.

There were more.

Dozens of them.

Plans about the house.

The bank accounts.

The custody petition.

And finally, one message that changed everything.

Priscilla had asked:

What happens if she refuses to sign?

Desmond’s response was simple.

Then we’ll make sure the court thinks she can’t take care of him.

Judge Fenwick slowly lowered the page.

“Mr. Ashcombe, did you write this?”

Desmond looked toward his attorney.

His attorney didn’t look back.

Then Desmond whispered:

“Yes.”

The room erupted in quiet whispers.

Judge Fenwick raised her hand.

“Silence.”

I thought that was the moment everything would finally be over.

It wasn’t.

Because the judge asked me one more question.

“Mrs. Ashcombe, you said your son is not the reason you’re asking for protection. He’s the proof.”

“Yes, Your Honor.”

“Proof of what?”

I opened the final section of the binder.

There was one document I had kept separate from everything else.

A hospital security report.

Six days earlier, while I was recovering from childbirth, someone had entered my hospital room after midnight.

The person wasn’t a nurse.

Wasn’t a doctor.

And wasn’t a family member who had permission to visit.

It was Priscilla.

She had tried to take Callum from the nursery.

My blood ran cold as I remembered the nurse waking me that night.

I had thought it was a mistake.

It wasn’t.

The security footage showed Priscilla standing outside the nursery at 2:13 a.m.

And according to the report, she had told the nurse:

“His father sent me.”

Desmond suddenly stood.

“I never told her to do that!”

Judge Fenwick looked at him.

“Sit down.”

He did.

Priscilla began crying.

“I wasn’t taking him. I only wanted to see him.”

“Then why did you identify yourself as the child’s authorized representative?”

Priscilla had no answer.

I looked at Desmond.

“You weren’t trying to get our son back.”

His face went pale.

“You were trying to make sure I lost him.”

Judge Fenwick closed the binder.

Then she issued an immediate temporary protection order.

Desmond was denied unsupervised access to Callum.

Priscilla was prohibited from contacting me or approaching the child.

And Cordelia was ordered to provide the court with every document she had witnessed concerning custody.

As the bailiff approached, Desmond looked at me.

His voice cracked.

“Please, don’t do this.”

I held Callum closer.

“You did this six days ago.”

Then Judge Fenwick said something that made everyone freeze.

“There is one more matter.”

She looked at Desmond’s attorney.

“Mr. Okonkwo, I want the court’s investigator to review the financial records referenced in this binder.”

His expression changed.

“Your Honor?”

“I believe the custody petition may be only one part of what was being planned.”

I looked down at my son.

And suddenly I understood.

Desmond hadn’t been preparing to take Callum from me.

He had been preparing to take everything.

The house.

The money.

My son’s inheritance.

And something hidden inside a trust account I had never even known existed.

But the investigator had already found one transfer.

And the name attached to it wasn’t Desmond’s.

It was Priscilla Vane.
