PART 2 — My Family Learned Why the Army Had Come for Me
Nobody moved.
The soldier standing beside me remained perfectly still.
Then another vehicle door opened.
A woman in uniform stepped out carrying a sealed black case.
She walked directly toward me.
“Colonel Halloway, we need to leave within ten minutes.”
My mother finally found her voice.
“Colonel?”
I looked at her.
“Yes.”
Her face had gone completely white.
“But you never told us.”
I almost laughed.
“You never asked.”
My father stepped forward.
“Wait. If you’re really an Army officer, why didn’t Desmond tell us?”
“Because you weren’t cleared to know.”
That sentence silenced him.
Callum suddenly looked nervous.
He glanced toward the military vehicles.
Then toward my bedroom window.
I noticed.
“Why are you looking at my room?”
He froze.
“I wasn’t.”
“Yes, you were.”
He looked away.
The soldier beside me quietly said, “Ma’am, we also need to secure your personal belongings.”
My mother stepped between us.
“Secure?”
I nodded.
“Everything connected to Desmond’s final assignment.”
Her expression changed.
“What does that mean?”
“It means his belongings are government property until the investigation is complete.”
My father suddenly became angry.
“This is our house.”
I looked at him.
“No.”
He stopped.
“This was Desmond’s house.”
I reached into my pocket and pulled out a folded document.
“The deed was transferred into my name three months before his final deployment.”
My father’s mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Priscilla stared at me.
“You knew?”
“I signed it.”
She shook her head.
“But why would Desmond do that?”
“Because he knew there was a possibility he wouldn’t come home.”
The garage became unbearably quiet.
I looked at the cardboard box beside me.
The same box they had given me to move my life into.
“Desmond wanted to make sure I was protected.”
My mother started crying.
“We didn’t know.”
I looked at her.
“You didn’t know because you never wanted to.”
Then the woman with the black case handed me an envelope.
“Colonel, this arrived from command.”
I recognized Desmond’s handwriting immediately.
My hands began trembling.
I opened it.
Inside was a single photograph of the two of us in uniform.
On the back he had written:
“If you’re reading this, they finally found out who you really are.”
My breath caught.
There was more.
“Don’t trust anyone who asks about the final mission.”
I looked up.
Everyone was watching me.
Then my father said quietly:
“Who would ask?”
I folded the letter.
“That’s classified.”
The soldier suddenly touched his earpiece.
His expression changed.
“Colonel, we have a problem.”
I turned.
“What?”
“Command just detected an unauthorized attempt to access Desmond’s classified file.”
My heart stopped.
“From where?”
He looked toward the house.
“From this property.”
Everyone went silent.
I slowly turned toward my family.
My father looked confused.
My mother looked terrified.
Priscilla looked at Callum.
And Callum…
looked at the floor.
I stared at him.
“Callum.”
He didn’t answer.
The soldier immediately stepped between us.
“Sir, don’t move.”
Callum raised both hands.
“I didn’t do anything.”
But the officer had already called for additional security.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
After a few seconds, he looked at me.
“Colonel, we’ve identified the device.”
“Whose?”
He hesitated.
“Your brother-in-law’s.”
Callum’s face collapsed.
Priscilla stepped backward.
“You?”
Callum shook his head.
“You don’t understand.”
I stared at him.
“What exactly don’t I understand?”
He looked at me with panic in his eyes.
“Desmond left something behind.”
My heart began pounding.
“What?”
Callum swallowed.
“A file.”
“What file?”
He looked toward the military vehicles.
“The file everyone thought Desmond died protecting.”
Then he whispered:
“He gave it to me before his last mission.”
I couldn’t breathe.
“You knew my husband?”
Callum nodded.
“And he told me that if anything happened to him, I was supposed to give it to you.”
I stared at him.
“Then why didn’t you?”
Callum’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because someone threatened my family.”
The officer immediately stepped forward.
“Who?”
Callum looked at me.
Then toward the road.
“He’s here.”
A black SUV had just stopped at the end of the driveway.
And for the first time that morning…
the soldiers raised their weapons.
