PART 2 — My Mother-in-Law Thought the Screen Would Destroy Me. Instead, It Exposed Everything She Had Done
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The only sound in the room was Margaret’s frantic breathing.
Then Daniel stood up.
“Turn it off.”
I looked at him.
“No.”
“Claire, please.”
“You had no problem recording me without my knowledge.”
His face tightened.
“I didn’t know about the camera.”
A murmur moved through the room.
I pointed toward the television.
“Then explain your laptop.”
Daniel stared at the screen.
His own face was frozen beside the forged deed.
His mother stepped toward him.
“Daniel, say something.”
He didn’t.
That was when my aunt Linda spoke.
“Claire, is all of this real?”
“Yes.”
I handed her a folder.
“Every recording has been preserved. The original files are with my attorney.”
Margaret suddenly laughed.
It was nervous and sharp.
“This is ridiculous. Anyone can edit a video.”
I nodded.
“That’s why I brought the forensic report.”
I handed another folder to her brother.
He was a retired judge.
He read the first page.
Then the second.
His expression changed.
“Margaret…”
She stared at him.
“What?”
“This report confirms the files weren’t altered.”
The room went silent again.
Margaret’s confidence disappeared.
Then Daniel walked toward me.
“You don’t understand.”
“I understand perfectly.”
“No, you don’t. Mom was trying to protect us.”
“From what?”
He hesitated.
“Your father’s estate.”
My heart stopped.
“What about it?”
Daniel looked down.
“Your father left you more than the lake house.”
I stared at him.
“What are you talking about?”
Margaret suddenly shouted.
“Daniel, stop!”
He turned toward her.
“You told me she would never find out!”
Everyone heard it.
His mother froze.
I slowly turned toward Margaret.
“What wouldn’t I find out?”
She said nothing.
Daniel’s shoulders dropped.
“Your father left you a trust.”
“How much?”
He swallowed.
“Nearly four million dollars.”
A gasp moved through the room.
I felt strangely calm.
I had known my father left me something.
But I had never known the amount.
Margaret stepped forward.
“We needed that money.”
I stared at her.
“You needed my money.”
“We were in debt.”
“You installed a camera in my bathroom.”
“I never watched you!”
“You hired someone to install it.”
She looked away.
That was enough.
Then my attorney entered the room.
I hadn’t told anyone she was coming.
She walked directly toward me and handed me a sealed envelope.
“Claire, the police are outside.”
Margaret’s face collapsed.
“Police?”
My attorney nodded.
“We have enough evidence for search warrants.”
Daniel looked at me.
“You called the police?”
“No.”
He looked confused.
“I didn’t have to.”
My attorney explained.
“The camera installation was reported. The forged deed was documented. And the digital evidence has already been preserved.”
Margaret backed away.
“This is a family matter.”
My attorney looked at her.
“Not anymore.”
Two officers entered the house.
Nobody spoke as they approached Margaret.
She suddenly grabbed my arm.
“Claire, please.”
I pulled away.
“You should have thought about that before you put a camera in my bathroom.”
Then she said something I’ll never forget.
“I was trying to make you look guilty.”
I stared at her.
“Of what?”
She whispered:
“Your father’s death.”
The room went completely still.
My father had died eighteen months earlier.
His death had always been ruled natural.
But Margaret continued.
“He was going to expose us.”
My blood ran cold.
“Expose what?”
She looked toward Daniel.
He wouldn’t meet my eyes.
Margaret finally whispered:
“The trust wasn’t the only thing he left behind.”
My attorney stepped closer.
“What else?”
Margaret’s eyes filled with tears.
“A recording.”
I felt the air leave my lungs.
“What recording?”
She looked at me.
“Your father knew what we were planning.”
Then the television suddenly changed.
A new file appeared.
One I had never seen before.
The date was three days before my father’s death.
His face appeared on the screen.
And he looked directly into the camera.
“If you’re watching this, Claire,” he said, “then something has gone terribly wrong.”
I couldn’t breathe.
My father continued.
“I need you to know who you can trust.”
Then he named one person.
Not Margaret.
Not Daniel.
Not even someone from my father’s business.
Someone standing in that room.
Someone I had trusted for years.
I slowly turned around.
And when I saw who my father had named…
I realized the camera in my bathroom had only been the first secret my family had tried to bury.
