MY SON OPENED THE FOLDER AND REVEALED THE ONE THING ARTHUR HAD NEVER TOLD ME
Ethan didn’t speak until we reached his car.
He locked the doors.
Then he placed a thick brown folder on the dashboard between us.
“Mom, before you look at this, I need you to promise me something.”
“What?”
“Don’t go back inside yet.”
My hands were already trembling.
“Ethan, what is this?”
He opened the folder.
The first page was a photograph.
Arthur.
But it wasn’t a photograph from our marriage.
It showed him standing outside a courthouse nearly twenty years earlier.
Beside him was a woman I had never seen before.
Under the photograph was a name.
Daniel Mercer.
I stared at it.
“Who’s Daniel Mercer?”
Ethan swallowed.
“Arthur’s real name.”
My stomach dropped.
“That can’t be.”
“I thought the same thing.”
He turned to the next page.
A driver’s license.
Different name.
Same face.
Then another document.
A marriage certificate.
Then another.
A divorce record.
My mouth went dry.
“Mom,” Ethan said quietly, “Arthur has been married four times.”
I stared at him.
“Four?”
“Before you.”
“And after me?”
He nodded.
“That’s not all.”
He pulled out several printed photographs.
Arthur with different women.
Different houses.
Different cities.
Different years.
But always the same pattern.
A wealthy woman.
A quick relationship.
A marriage.
Then financial transfers.
My hands began shaking.
“Where did you get this?”
“I hired someone to investigate him six weeks ago.”
“You investigated my daughter’s fiancé?”
“I investigated the man marrying my sister.”
He looked directly at me.
“I couldn’t ignore what I found.”
I turned another page.
There were bank statements.
Large transfers.
Insurance policies.
Property documents.
And then I saw something that made my heart stop.
My name.
I looked at Ethan.
“Why is my name here?”
He didn’t answer immediately.
Then he whispered,
“Because Arthur has been planning this longer than you think.”
I felt cold all over.
“What does that mean?”
Ethan pointed to a document.
It was an insurance application.
Arthur had listed Camille as the beneficiary.
But another document showed something even worse.
A life insurance policy on me.
I couldn’t breathe.
“He took out a policy on you?”
“Not exactly.”
Ethan pointed toward the signature.
“Someone forged your name.”
I stared at the page.
Then everything suddenly made sense.
The questions Arthur had asked during our short marriage.
My health.
My finances.
My property.
The small lake house my parents had left me.
Back then, I thought he was simply trying to understand our future.
Now I realized he had been collecting information.
“Why would he marry Camille?”
Ethan’s expression changed.
“Because of the lake house.”
My heart sank.
“That’s impossible. Camille doesn’t own it.”
“Not yet.”
He pulled out another document.
My daughter’s wedding gift.
A deed transfer.
Arthur had convinced Camille to ask me to transfer the property to them as a “family investment.”
I remembered that conversation.
Camille had mentioned it two months earlier.
I had refused because I didn’t want to give away the property.
Arthur had smiled and said he understood.
Apparently, he hadn’t.
I closed my eyes.
“My daughter doesn’t know.”
“No.”
“Does she know any of this?”
“Not yet.”
I looked toward the reception hall.
Through the glass doors, I could see Camille laughing beside Arthur.
She looked happy.
Completely unaware.
“We have to tell her.”
Ethan grabbed my arm.
“Mom, wait.”
“What?”
“There’s one more thing.”
He opened the final section of the folder.
Inside was a photograph.
I recognized the woman immediately.
She was one of Arthur’s former wives.
Her face was bruised.
Beside the photograph was a police report.
I read the first paragraph.
Then the second.
My hands went numb.
“Arthur didn’t just take money from these women,” Ethan whispered.
“He was investigated for what happened to one of them.”
I looked up.
“Was she killed?”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“She survived.”
“Then where is she?”
Ethan pulled out his phone.
“I found her.”
He showed me a message.
The woman’s name was Rachel.
She had agreed to meet us.
Tonight.
Right outside the reception hall.
My heart pounded.
“Why would she come here?”
Ethan looked toward the building.
“Because she wants to stop Arthur.”
We stepped out of the car.
Five minutes later, a woman in a dark coat approached us.
She looked older than her photograph.
But the fear in her eyes was unmistakable.
“Are you Ethan?”
“Yes.”
Her eyes moved toward me.
“And you’re his mother?”
I nodded.
She took a shaky breath.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
She looked toward the reception hall.
“For not finding you sooner.”
I didn’t understand.
Then she reached into her purse.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“I found this after Arthur disappeared from my life.”
She handed it to me.
Inside was a handwritten note.
I recognized the handwriting immediately.
Arthur’s.
But the date at the top was from three years before I had ever met him.
I read the first line.
And my knees nearly gave out.
Because Arthur hadn’t randomly chosen Camille.
He had been watching my family for years.
And the final sentence explained exactly why.
“Once I marry her daughter, the property will finally be within reach.”
I looked toward the reception hall.
My daughter was still smiling.
Arthur was standing beside her.
Then my phone rang.
It was Camille.
“Mom?”
Her voice sounded confused.
“Where are you?”
I couldn’t answer.
Then she whispered,
“Arthur just asked me where you keep the original deed to Grandma’s lake house.”
I looked at Ethan.
He looked back at me.
The wedding music was still playing behind those doors.
But suddenly, none of us cared about the celebration anymore.
Because my daughter had just married the man who had once been my husband.
And now we had proof that her wedding had never been about love.
It had been about what Arthur believed our family could give him.
And before the night was over, I was going to make sure he lost everything.
