Part 2 — My Mother’s Letter Revealed Why She Really Abandoned Us
I stared at the first line of my mother’s letter for what felt like an entire minute.
Then I read it again.
“If you’re reading this, then my daughters are finally old enough to know what really happened.”
My hands began to shake.
I looked at Nora, Piper, and Wren.
“Why didn’t you give me this two years ago?”
Piper wiped her tears.
“Because Mom made us promise we’d wait until we were twenty.”
I looked back at the letter.
The next sentence made my stomach drop.
“I didn’t leave because I didn’t love my children.”
I stopped breathing.
For twenty years, I had believed my mother simply walked away because she didn’t want the responsibility.
I had told myself that every time one of my sisters asked why she never came back.
But the letter continued.
“That afternoon, I wasn’t running away from my daughters. I was running from the person who had threatened to hurt them.”
I looked up.
“Who?”
None of my sisters answered.
I kept reading.
My mother explained that for months before she left, someone had been sending her threatening letters.
Someone knew about the babies.
Someone wanted her to disappear.
And apparently, the threats weren’t about her.
They were about us.
Then I reached the part that made my heart pound.
“Your brother was supposed to be taken too.”
I froze.
I didn’t have a brother.
Or at least, that’s what I’d always been told.
I looked at my sisters.
“Who is she talking about?”
Wren finally whispered, “That’s the part we were afraid to tell you.”
I turned the page.
There was a photograph tucked inside.
It showed my mother standing beside a young man I had never seen before.
On the back, she had written four words:
“Your father’s other son.”
I sat down.
My father had died when I was little, and my mother had always told me he had no family outside of us.
But suddenly, everything I believed about my childhood felt like a carefully constructed lie.
Then I noticed one final paragraph.
“I knew I couldn’t protect all of you by staying. So I made the hardest decision of my life. I made you hate me because I thought hatred was safer than letting the truth put you in danger.”
I couldn’t stop crying.
For twenty years, I had raised three girls believing their mother abandoned them.
Now I wondered whether she had sacrificed herself instead.
But the final sentence of the letter was the one that truly terrified me.
“If my daughters are reading this with you, tell them I didn’t disappear forever. I stayed close enough to watch over them.”
I looked at Nora.
“Your mother was still watching us?”
She nodded slowly.
Then Piper reached into her purse.
“There was one more thing she gave us.”
She placed a small key in my palm.
“Mom told us not to give it to you until you were ready to know everything.”
I stared at the key.
And then Wren whispered the words that made all three of us go silent:
“There’s a storage locker in Chicago with your name on it.”
The same Chicago I had given up twenty years earlier.
The same city where I had planned to start my life.
And suddenly, I realized my mother hadn’t abandoned our family that afternoon.
She had been trying to hide something from us.
Something she believed was dangerous enough to destroy all four of our lives.
