My Husband’s “Babymoon” Wasn’t a Vacation. The Detective Found Out What They Planned for Me

Part 2 — My Husband’s “Babymoon” Wasn’t a Vacation. The Detective Found Out What They Planned for Me

The detective placed a folder on the table.

“Claire, we need you to understand something.”

I looked at him.

“The evidence suggests your husband wasn’t planning to kill you that night.”

I felt a strange sense of relief.

Then he continued.

“He was planning to make your death look accidental.”

My blood ran cold.

He opened the folder.

Inside were photographs of a remote mountain resort.

The exact place Ryan had told me we were going for our February babymoon.

The detective pointed to one photograph.

“This road has no cell service for almost twelve miles.”

Another photograph showed a sharp curve overlooking a steep ravine.

“Your husband’s father owns property nearby.”

I couldn’t breathe.

Then Ryan’s sister, Megan, walked into the room.

She looked exhausted.

“I need to tell you everything.”

She sat across from me.

“At Christmas, I overheard Ryan and Dad arguing.”

“What were they arguing about?”

Megan looked at the detective.

“Ryan wanted to wait until after the baby was born.”

My stomach tightened.

“Why?”

“Because he wanted the baby to survive.”

I stared at her.

She began crying.

“Dad said the insurance would pay either way, but Ryan said they needed you alive long enough to sign something.”

My attorney leaned forward.

“Sign what?”

Megan pulled a photograph from her purse.

It showed a document.

A trust agreement.

My name was on it.

But the signature wasn’t mine.

The document transferred control of my investments to a company owned by Ryan’s father.

And there was one more clause.

If I died, the company would receive everything.

My attorney looked at me.

“This is why they needed access to your identity.”

Suddenly, every strange thing about my marriage made sense.

Ryan hadn’t simply fallen in love with me.

He had researched me.

He had studied me.

He had learned my routines.

My finances.

My weaknesses.

And he had spent years building my trust.

Then the detective placed another photograph on the table.

It was the woman who had died on the mountain road years earlier.

Her name was Melissa.

She had been Ryan’s former girlfriend.

“She had a life-insurance policy too,” the detective said.

I stared at the photograph.

“Was Ryan the beneficiary?”

“No.”

The detective paused.

“His father’s company was.”

My hands began trembling.

Then Megan whispered something that made everything worse.

“Melissa figured it out.”

“What?”

“She discovered what their family was doing.”

“And then?”

“She threatened to go to the police.”

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

The detective finally said,

“Her death was ruled an accident.”

“But you don’t believe that.”

“No.”

He opened another folder.

“We found evidence that her car had been tampered with.”

I felt sick.

Then my phone rang.

The number was unknown.

The detective answered it on speaker.

A man’s voice came through.

“Tell Claire she needs to stop talking.”

The detective immediately signaled everyone to remain quiet.

The voice continued.

“Ryan isn’t the one you should be afraid of.”

Then the call ended.

I stared at Megan.

“Who was that?”

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

But her expression told me she did.

Before I could ask, another investigator rushed into the room.

“We found Ryan.”

My heart stopped.

“Where?”

“At the airport.”

He was trying to leave the country.

But he wasn’t alone.

His father was with him.

And they had two passports each.

One belonging to Ryan.

One belonging to a man whose name I didn’t recognize.

The investigator handed me a photograph.

I looked at it.

The stranger was standing beside Ryan.

Then I recognized him.

He was the same man I’d seen in an old photograph inside Ryan’s hidden file.

The man who had been watching me years before I ever met my husband.

I looked at the detective.

“Who is he?”

The detective’s expression changed.

“He’s the person who originally recruited Ryan’s family.”

My blood ran cold.

“Recruited them for what?”

He didn’t answer immediately.

Then he opened the final page of the investigation.

“We believe this family has been doing this for more than twenty years.”

The room went silent.

Women.

Widows.

Wealthy women with few relatives.

Each marriage lasted just long enough to transfer assets.

And then, somehow, each woman disappeared from the picture.

I looked down at my swollen stomach.

My daughter kicked.

Once.

Twice.

I placed my hand over her.

For the first time since the attack, I felt something other than fear.

I felt determination.

Ryan had chosen me because he thought I was alone.

He had no idea how badly he had underestimated me.

But just before the detective closed the folder, he said one final thing.

“Claire, there’s something else.”

I looked up.

“Your husband didn’t choose you.”

“What do you mean?”

He slid a photograph across the table.

It was dated eight years before I met Ryan.

It showed me walking out of my office.

Standing several yards away was Ryan.

Watching me.

The detective whispered,

“He had been following you long before your first date.”

And suddenly, I realized my marriage hadn’t started when Ryan proposed.

It had started years earlier.

When he first saw me.

And decided I would be his next target.
