PART 2 — I Looked at My Niece’s Back and Finally Understood Why My Brother Refused to Take Her Home
I couldn’t move.
The baby was still in my arms.
Ryan stood beside the hospital bed, staring at the floor.
Melissa was crying so hard she could barely breathe.
“Ryan,” I whispered. “What am I supposed to be seeing?”
He pointed toward the baby’s upper back.
I carefully moved the blanket.
There, just beneath her shoulder blade, was a small birthmark.
A dark crescent surrounded by three tiny dots.
My stomach dropped.
Because I had seen that mark before.
Not on a baby.
On my father.
I looked at Ryan.
He was already crying.
“Dad had the same mark.”
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t mean anything. Birthmarks can run in families.”
Ryan pulled out his phone.
He opened an old photograph.
It was our father standing beside our mother in the hospital shortly after we were born.
He turned the photograph toward me.
Dad was wearing a hospital gown.
And there it was.
The exact same mark.
Melissa stared at the picture.
“But that’s not why you said you can’t take her,” she whispered.
Ryan closed his eyes.
“No.”
He looked at me.
“That’s only the beginning.”
My heart started pounding.
“What else?”
He reached into the pocket of his jacket and pulled out a folded document.
“I found this three days ago.”
I opened it.
It was an old medical record.
Our father’s name was at the top.
The diagnosis underneath made my blood run cold.
A rare inherited genetic condition.
One that doctors had warned him could be passed to his children.
But there was something even stranger.
The document wasn’t from our childhood.
It was dated only eight months earlier.
I stared at Ryan.
“Why did Dad have a genetic test eight months before he died?”
Ryan’s voice cracked.
“Because he was trying to find out something about our family.”
Melissa stepped closer.
“What?”
Ryan looked at her.
“He wasn’t our biological father.”
Silence.
I actually laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because my mind couldn’t process it.
“That’s impossible.”
Ryan shook his head.
“Mom had an affair before we were born.”
I stared at the document.
“Then who was our father?”
Ryan swallowed.
“We don’t know.”
Melissa suddenly covered her mouth.
“Then the birthmark…”
Ryan nodded.
“The doctors told me the baby may have inherited the condition from her biological father.”
I looked down at the little girl.
She was sleeping peacefully.
Completely unaware that everyone around her was falling apart.
“But she’s still your daughter,” I whispered.
Ryan shook his head.
“That’s exactly why I’m terrified.”
He explained that during the pregnancy, the fertility clinic had made an error.
The embryo transfer records didn’t match the original paperwork.
There was a possibility that the embryo wasn’t genetically theirs.
The hospital had already started an emergency investigation.
And now the birthmark had made Ryan suspicious.
I looked at Melissa.
She was trembling.
“Are you saying she’s not our baby?”
“No,” Ryan said quickly.
“I’m saying we don’t know yet.”
Then the doctor walked into the room.
His expression was serious.
“Mr. and Mrs. Carter, we need to speak with you.”
Ryan stood.
“About the baby?”
The doctor nodded.
“There appears to have been a problem with the fertility records.”
My entire body went cold.
“What kind of problem?”
He hesitated.
“Two embryos were transferred on the same day.”
Melissa stared at him.
“What are you saying?”
“The genetic screening indicates that this baby may not be biologically related to either of you.”
Melissa collapsed into the chair.
Ryan looked at me.
And I suddenly understood why he had put the baby back into my arms.
He wasn’t rejecting her.
He was afraid.
Afraid that if he took her home before the truth was known, he might lose her all over again.
The doctor continued.
“There is one more issue.”
Everyone looked at him.
“The embryo’s genetic profile appears to match another patient from the same fertility clinic.”
Ryan’s face went pale.
“Who?”
The doctor looked down at the file.
Then back at him.
“A woman who gave birth here eleven years ago.”
My heart stopped.
“Who?”
The doctor slowly said the name.
It was our mother’s name.
I felt the room disappear around me.
Our mother had died years ago.
She couldn’t possibly have been involved.
Unless…
the medical records weren’t what we thought they were.
Ryan grabbed the edge of the bed.
“That’s impossible.”
The doctor shook his head.
“We thought so too.”
Then he placed another file on the table.
Inside was an old consent form.
Our mother’s signature was at the bottom.
And beside it was a note that had been added years later.
“Embryo preserved. Biological father unknown.”
Melissa started crying again.
Ryan looked at me.
I looked down at the baby.
And suddenly, the little girl we’d believed was simply our niece might have been connected to a secret our parents had taken to their graves.
But the next morning, the DNA results arrived.
And when the doctor opened the envelope, he looked directly at Ryan before saying:
“This baby isn’t who you think she is.”
