My hands shook violently in the freezing night air as I pressed the phone to my ear, waiting for Emily to pick up. My mind was spinning out of control. I forced myself to step back toward the open window, hiding in the shadows of the balcony, just close enough to hear the final, devastating details of Joon’s conversation with his father before the line connected.
Young-ho slammed his hand on the dining table, his voice full of pure disgust.
“You used an innocent foreign girl just to get citizenship and a legal loophole to save your bankrupt logistics company! You took her life savings under the guise of an investment, knowing your business was already failing. If the authorities trace the fraudulent funds back to her account, Emily could face prison time alongside you. You are destroying a good woman’s life!”
Joon’s voice turned incredibly cold, completely dropping the polite, sweet persona he always played whenever I was in the room.
“It was the only way to pay off the corporate loan sharks without going to jail myself,” Joon muttered defensively. “Her family’s clean background was my perfect shield. I just need to keep up the act for one more year until the restructuring is complete. She loves me blindly; she will never look into the bank statements. As long as her mother stays oblivious during this visit, my plan is safe.”
Hearing those words, the phone finally clicked as Emily answered with a cheerful, tired voice. “Hey Mom! Sorry, I’m just leaving the office now. Are Joon and his parents treating you well?”
I took a deep, sharp breath, looking through the glass at the monster sitting inside. “Emily,” I whispered, my voice cutting through the night like ice. “Do not come home. Go straight to a hotel, lock your doors, and log into your primary savings account immediately. Your husband is a fraud.”
I didn’t wait for her panicked response. I hung up, walked straight back inside the house, and stepped right into the dining room. Joon and Young-ho froze as I stood at the head of the table. Joon quickly tried to smooth his face into his usual charming smile, adjusting his posture.
“Oh, mother-in-law! You’re back inside. Is everything okay? You look cold,” he said smoothly in English.
I looked him dead in the eye and responded in flawless, fluent Korean.
“The act is over, Joon. I understood every single word you just said to your father. The authorities are being notified, Emily’s money is being traced, and you will never see my daughter again. Pack your bags and get out of this house before the police arrive.”
Joon’s face turned completely pale, the color draining from his cheeks as his perfect empire crumbled to pieces right in front of him.
