We are already en route, Claire. We were moving into position down the road anyway. Paramedics are right behind us. Hold on.”
The call ended. I slid the phone back into my purse, another blinding wave of pain radiating through my abdomen. I leaned against the marble sink, counting my breaths, trying to block out the distant sound of the wedding band playing a cheerful jazz song.
Ten minutes passed like hours. Then, loud shouting echoed from the service hallway.
“You can’t go in there! This is a private event!” Victoria’s voice shrieked, her usual calculated poise completely shattered.
The bathroom door flew open. Mara Voss stepped inside, flanked by two paramedics carrying a stretcher. She took one look at me and nodded to the medics.
“Get her loaded safely,” Mara ordered, before kneeling beside me. “We’ve got you, Claire. And we’ve got them.”
As they wheeled me out into the grand ballroom, the music abruptly stopped. Three hundred guests turned to stare. Evan rushed forward from the crowd, his face pale, his tuxedo jacket wrinkled.
“Claire! Thank God,” he stammered, reaching for my hand. “The ceremony just ended, I was coming back for you—”
“Step back, sir,” Special Agent Voss intercepted him, flashing her federal badge. Behind her, a dozen armed agents in tactical vests poured through the vineyard’s glass doors.
Victoria rushed over, her diamond necklace catching the chandelier light. “What is the meaning of this? This is my daughter’s wedding! You can’t just crash a private estate!”
“Victoria Bellacourt, Evan Bellacourt, and Celeste Bellacourt,” Mara announced, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. “You are under arrest for grand larceny, racketeering, and organized financial fraud.”
Evan gasped, looking from the badge to me on the stretcher. “Claire? What did you do?”
I looked at my husband, the man who had let his mother lock me in a bathroom during premature labor to protect a photo op.
“I didn’t do anything, Evan,” I said weakly as a contraction hit. “You signed the papers. I just balanced the books.”
As the paramedics pushed my stretcher out toward the flashing red and blue lights of the waiting ambulance, I looked back one last time. Victoria was being cuffed in her designer gown, Celeste was crying on the marble floor, and Evan was realizing too late that the ‘little accountant’ had just closed their accounts permanently.
