He handed me the paper, his fingers shaking so violently that the edges rustled. It was a medical document from a prestigious private genetics clinic, dated five years ago.
“What is this, Ben?” I whispered, my eyes scanning the text.
“That is the reason Rosie and I got married,” he said, a tear finally breaking free and rolling down his cheek. “Six years ago, before Rosie and I ever started dating, she came to me. She had secretly taken a routine health screening that revealed a rare, aggressive genetic heart defect common in her specific lineage. She knew she didn’t have much time left.”
My breath caught in my throat. I looked down at the paper. There it was—a terminal diagnosis masked beneath complex medical jargon.
“She didn’t want to burden you or your parents with years of grief and medical debt,” Ben continued, his voice cracking. “But she had a dream. She wanted to experience true, unconditional love, a real wedding, and a family of her own before her time ran out. She asked me to be her partner in that final chapter. She made me promise never to let her feel like a patient.”
I stared at my best friend, the realization washing over me like ice water. He hadn’t married her for money, or to stay close to me. He had sacrificed his own future comfort to give my sister a lifetime of happiness packed into a few short years.
“The twins…” I gasped, my hand flying to my mouth.
“The doctors told her pregnancy would severely strain her heart,” Ben nodded, his chest heaving with silent sobs. “But she insisted. She wanted to leave a piece of her love behind for us. For you, for your parents, and for me.”
Just then, the heavy double doors of the surgery wing swung open. A doctor stepped out, pulling off his surgical mask, his expression unreadable. Ben and I rushed forward, holding our breath, waiting for the verdict that would change our lives forever.
