My hands trembled as I unfolded it. The heavy, formal letterhead of a high-end legal firm blurred before my eyes, but the bold words stamped across the top stood out clearly: PRE-ADMISSION COMMITMENT AND TRUST AMENDMENT.
I read the lines, my chest tightening so hard I couldn’t breathe. It was an agreement signed by my mother and father. The document outlined a plan to transfer Annie’s entire share of our family’s estate into a private account under my name, while simultaneously committing Annie to a long-term, isolated state facility the moment she turned twenty-one.
They were going to lock her away and hide her from the world, using her diagnosis as an excuse to strip her of her freedom and inheritance.
“They didn’t want the responsibility,” Levi whispered, his voice cracking with pure anger. “And they didn’t want her ’embarrassing’ the family name once she became an adult. They were going to do it quietly, telling you that she chose to live in a specialized care home.”
“How… how did you get this?” I gasped, tears finally spilling down my cheeks.
“Annie found it,” Levi said, kneeling in front of me. “She was looking for a passport in your dad’s office years ago and found these papers. She was devastated. She came to me crying, begging me not to tell you because she knew it would destroy your relationship with your parents. She didn’t want you to hate them.”
He took a deep breath, wiping a tear from his own face. “She asked me to help her escape their legal guardianship. The only way to completely block your parents from putting her away was for her to marry someone who would legally become her next of kin and protector. I didn’t marry her out of pity, and I didn’t do it to get close to you. I married her because I loved her fiercely as my best friend, and I swore I would spend the rest of my life keeping her safe.”
Levi gripped my hands tighter. “But over the last few years, that protective love turned into something deeper. She became my whole world. I truly, deeply love her, secrets and all.”
Before I could even process the staggering weight of my parents’ betrayal and Levi’s incredible sacrifice, the heavy double doors of the operating room swung open.
A doctor walked out, pulling off his surgical mask. His face was exhausted, but a small smile broke through the tension.
“The surgery was incredibly difficult,” the doctor announced, “but your sister is a fighter. Annie is awake, stable, and breathing on her own. And you have a healthy baby boy and a baby girl waiting to meet you.”
Levi let out a choked sob of pure relief and dropped to his knees, burying his face in his hands. I knelt beside him, wrapping my arms around my brother, knowing that our family would never be the same again—but together, we were going to give Annie and those babies the beautiful life they always deserved.
