PART 2 — THE FOUR-MILLION-DOLLAR AUDIT
Adrian stood completely still.
“What documents?”
His attorney’s voice became unusually quiet.
“Your business partner has given investigators access to the company records.”
Adrian’s stomach tightened.
“Which records?”
“All of them.”
He looked toward the USB drive on his desk.
For the first time, he understood why Claire had been so calm.
She hadn’t simply collected evidence of his affair.
She had been building something much bigger.
“Where is Claire?” Adrian asked.
“I don’t know.”
“You’re her attorney too?”
“No.”
“Then how do you know about the court order?”
“Because the judge signed it this morning.”
Adrian’s hand tightened around his phone.
“What exactly did Claire submit?”
His attorney hesitated.
“A forensic audit.”
Adrian froze.
“How much?”
“Four million dollars.”
The room seemed to spin.
He looked at the papers Claire had left behind.
Four million dollars.
The same amount he had transferred to Vanessa.
But Claire’s audit showed something he hadn’t realized.
The money hadn’t simply disappeared.
It had been moved through several shell accounts.
And every transaction had been documented.
Dates.
Account numbers.
Invoices.
Emails.
Even screenshots of conversations between Adrian and Vanessa.
His affair wasn’t the only thing Claire had discovered.
She had traced money from the company into private accounts controlled by Adrian.
Then she found something even worse.
A construction project that had officially cost the company $8.7 million had actually cost less than $5 million.
The difference had been diverted.
Adrian sat down.
“Who else knows?”
His attorney answered:
“Your board.”
Adrian’s face went pale.
“What?”
“The board is holding an emergency meeting this afternoon.”
He immediately called Vanessa.
No answer.
He called again.
Nothing.
Then a message appeared on his phone.
We need to talk.
It was from Vanessa.
He replied immediately.
Where are you?
Three dots appeared.
Then disappeared.
A second message arrived.
You should have told me your wife was an auditor.
Adrian’s blood ran cold.
He typed:
What did you do?
Vanessa replied:
What you asked me to do.
Then she sent him a photograph.
It showed a stack of company documents.
Several pages had Adrian’s signature.
But there was one problem.
The signatures weren’t real.
Someone had forged them.
Adrian stared at the screen.
“I never signed those.”
His attorney heard him.
“What?”
Adrian turned the phone around.
His attorney studied the photograph.
Then his expression changed.
“Adrian…”
“What?”
“These documents authorize transfers that you never reported.”
Adrian swallowed.
“Who forged them?”
His attorney looked at him.
“That’s what investigators are going to ask you.”
A knock suddenly came from the front door.
The housekeeper opened it.
Two investigators stood outside.
“Mr. Whitmore?”
Adrian slowly stood.
“Yes.”
“We need to speak with you.”
“About what?”
One investigator held up a folder.
“Financial fraud.”
Adrian looked toward the staircase.
His entire life seemed to be collapsing around him.
Then the second investigator said:
“And there is another matter.”
“What?”
“Your wife has filed an emergency request regarding your son.”
Adrian’s face changed.
“Is Elliot okay?”
“He’s stable.”
Relief briefly crossed Adrian’s face.
Then the investigator continued.
“But Mrs. Whitmore is requesting sole temporary custody.”
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“You can’t take my son away.”
“No one is taking him away.”
The investigator looked directly at him.
“She’s asking the court to prevent you from removing him from the state.”
Adrian finally understood.
Claire wasn’t trying to punish him.
She was protecting their child.
Then the investigator opened the folder.
“We also found evidence that someone attempted to move another $600,000 from your company account this morning.”
Adrian stared at him.
“I didn’t do that.”
“I know.”
The investigator turned a page.
“Because the transfer was made after your accounts were frozen.”
Adrian’s blood ran cold.
“Then who did it?”
The investigator looked toward the USB drive sitting on Adrian’s desk.
“That’s what we’re trying to determine.”
Suddenly, Adrian’s phone rang.
It was Claire.
His hands began shaking as he answered.
“Claire?”
For several seconds, neither of them spoke.
Then her voice came through.
“You finally found the audit.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
“Please come home.”
“I can’t.”
“Where are you?”
There was a long silence.
Then Claire said:
“Somewhere you can’t reach us.”
“Claire, I love you.”
Her voice became colder.
“You loved the version of me who stayed quiet.”
Adrian’s eyes filled with tears.
“I made mistakes.”
“No.”
She paused.
“You made choices.”
Then she added:
“And there is one more thing you need to know.”
Adrian held his breath.
“The four million dollars wasn’t the biggest amount I found.”
“What do you mean?”
Claire replied:
“I found where the other twelve million went.”
The call ended.
Adrian stared at his phone.
Twelve million dollars.
He had never seen that number in the company accounts.
Then his attorney slowly opened another file.
Inside was a transaction history from three years earlier.
At the top was the name of a private offshore company.
And beneath it was the name of the person who had authorized every transfer.
Adrian stared at the signature.
His own.
But he knew immediately that he hadn’t signed it.
Someone had been stealing millions through his identity for years.
And Claire had just discovered who was behind it.
