PART 2 — THE TRUTH ABOUT THE MAN MY GRANDMOTHER MARRIED
I read the first line again.
“My dear, it’s time you finally learned who Daniel really is.”
My hands were trembling.
I kept reading.
“This was always the plan.”
I stopped.
What plan?
I continued.
“Beatrice, I knew from the moment Daniel entered my life that you would suspect him.”
A tear rolled down my cheek.
“I knew you would think he wanted my house.”
“And I knew you would try to protect me.”
I covered my mouth.
She had known.
Every argument.
Every warning.
Every suspicious look I had given Daniel.
She had known all of it.
Then I reached the sentence that changed everything.
“Daniel did not marry me for my money.”
“He married me because I asked him to.”
I stared at the page.
“What?”
My grandmother explained that she had met Daniel several years earlier.
Not through romance.
Through a community program for elderly people living alone.
Daniel had been volunteering there.
He helped older residents with groceries, transportation, paperwork, and basic home repairs.
My grandmother had watched him quietly for months.
Then she discovered something about him.
Daniel wasn’t a stranger.
He was connected to my grandfather.
My grandfather had a younger sister.
Her name was Rose.
And Rose had disappeared from the family decades earlier.
I kept reading.
“Daniel is Rose’s grandson.”
I froze.
Daniel was my grandmother’s grandnephew.
Not a random young man who had appeared because he saw an elderly widow with a house.
He was family.
But there was more.
My grandmother explained that Rose had spent years searching for something my grandfather had hidden before he died.
A small metal box.
According to family records, my grandfather had placed it somewhere inside the house.
He had never told anyone where.
Daniel had been helping Margaret search for it.
But why had they married?
The answer was in the next paragraph.
“Because I knew someone was watching the house.”
I stopped breathing.
Margaret wrote that several months before Daniel appeared, someone had tried to access her bank account.
Then someone had attempted to change the locks on her house.
She had reported it.
But the person disappeared before police could identify them.
Daniel offered to help.
And eventually, Margaret discovered that the person behind it was someone she knew.
Someone in the extended family.
Someone who believed Margaret was hiding money.
I felt sick.
My grandmother had suspected that I might be targeted too.
So she created the marriage as a shield.
Daniel moved into the house.
He handled the security.
He attended appointments.
He kept records.
And most importantly, he made anyone watching believe Margaret had someone protecting her.
Then I reached the final pages.
My grandmother had written:
“Daniel never wanted my house.”
“He wanted to make sure you received it safely.”
I started crying.
All those months I had treated him like a criminal.
He had been protecting the woman I loved most.
But there was one final envelope inside the box.
It had my name written across it.
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
It showed Daniel standing beside my grandfather.
But the date on the photograph was impossible.
It had been taken only two months before my grandfather died.
I stared at it.
My grandfather was holding the same metal box my grandmother had mentioned.
On the back of the photograph, there was a handwritten sentence:
Daniel knows where it is.
I immediately called him.
He answered on the second ring.
“Beatrice?”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
There was silence.
“You read the letter.”
“Yes.”
“I wanted Margaret to tell you herself.”
“She said you knew where the box was.”
Daniel took a long breath.
“I do.”
“Where?”
Another silence.
Then he said:
“Your grandmother never wanted the box opened while she was alive.”
“Why?”
“Because what’s inside doesn’t belong to her.”
My heart began racing.
“Then who does it belong to?”
Daniel answered quietly.
“Your grandfather.”
I frowned.
“He’s been dead for fifteen years.”
“I know.”
“Then what’s inside?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
Instead, he asked:
“Are you alone?”
“Yes.”
“Lock your doors.”
My stomach tightened.
“Why?”
“Because the person your grandmother was afraid of knows she died.”
I couldn’t speak.
Daniel continued.
“And they’ve already started looking for the box.”
At that exact moment, I heard something outside my car.
A soft knock against the window.
I turned.
A man was standing beside my driver’s door.
He leaned toward the glass.
Then he whispered something that made my blood run cold.
“Where’s Daniel?”
