PART 2 — MY HUSBAND FINALLY CHOSE HIS MOTHER, SO I SHOWED THEM BOTH THE TRUTH
Eric stood in the kitchen holding the new house key.
His mother was behind him.
Neither of them spoke.
Then Vanessa finally broke the silence.
“You’re really going to let her do this?”
Eric looked at me.
“What exactly do you want me to do?”
Vanessa pointed toward the front door.
“Tell her this is your house too.”
I didn’t say anything.
I wanted to hear the answer from him.
Eric took a slow breath.
“Mom, she owns the house.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
“What?”
“The deed is in her name.”
“You’re my son.”
“I know.”
“So why are you letting your wife treat me like a stranger?”
Eric looked uncomfortable.
“Because you’re not entitled to enter our bedroom whenever you want.”
Vanessa stared at him as though he had betrayed her.
Then she turned toward me.
“You’ve turned my son against me.”
“No,” I said quietly.
“You did that yourself.”
She stormed upstairs.
A few minutes later, I heard drawers opening.
I immediately followed her.
She was standing beside the guest room closet with a suitcase on the bed.
“What are you doing?”
“Leaving.”
“Good.”
She stopped.
I expected an argument.
Instead, she smiled.
“You think you’ve won.”
I frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Vanessa zipped the suitcase.
“You should ask yourself why I was looking through your desk.”
My stomach tightened.
“What did you find?”
She smiled again.
“Nothing.”
Then she walked past me.
But I knew she was lying.
That night, after Vanessa went to bed, I checked the security footage from the hallway.
There she was.
Walking into our bedroom.
Opening my desk.
Removing a folder.
Then photographing several pages with her phone.
I watched the footage twice.
The folder contained copies of the property deed, my grandmother’s estate documents, and several bank statements.
I immediately woke Eric.
“Your mother was photographing my financial documents.”
He rubbed his eyes.
“Maybe she was just curious.”
“Eric.”
“What?”
“She knew exactly what she was looking for.”
He sat up.
“Why?”
“I don’t know yet.”
The next morning, Vanessa announced that she had decided not to leave.
“I’ve changed my mind,” she said over breakfast.
I looked at Eric.
He wouldn’t meet my eyes.
“Why?”
“Because I have nowhere else to go.”
“You have a condo.”
“It’s being repaired.”
“You’ve been saying that for six months.”
She slammed her coffee cup down.
“I am still your husband’s mother.”
I nodded.
“And I am still the owner of this house.”
For the first time, Vanessa didn’t have an answer.
Later that afternoon, I received an unexpected phone call from my attorney.
“Have you recently had anyone ask about transferring ownership of your property?”
My heart stopped.
“No. Why?”
“We received an inquiry.”
“From whom?”
There was a pause.
Then he said:
“Your husband’s mother.”
I sat down.
“What?”
“She contacted a title company.”
“She claimed your husband had contributed significantly to the property and wanted to know whether he had a legal ownership interest.”
I looked toward the living room.
Eric was sitting beside Vanessa.
My attorney continued.
“She also asked whether you had any estate documents proving that the property was inherited.”
I suddenly understood.
She wasn’t trying to control the house.
She was trying to find a way to claim it.
I ended the call.
Then I walked into the living room.
“Vanessa.”
She looked up.
“Yes?”
“Why did you contact a title company about my house?”
Eric immediately looked at his mother.
“What?”
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“I was only asking questions.”
“You asked whether Eric could claim ownership.”
“I was protecting my son.”
“From what?”
She didn’t answer.
Then Eric stood.
“Mom, did you actually do that?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“You don’t understand.”
“No,” Eric said quietly.
“I don’t.”
She turned toward me.
“You’ve always treated this like it belongs only to you.”
“It does.”
“That isn’t fair.”
I stared at her.
“Fair?”
“My grandmother left me this house.”
“She left you money,” Vanessa snapped.
“And you used it to buy this property.”
“Yes.”
“So why should my son have nothing?”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“Because he didn’t buy it.”
Eric lowered his head.
Then Vanessa said something that made both of us go silent.
“He was supposed to.”
I looked at Eric.
“What does that mean?”
He didn’t answer.
Vanessa did.
“Eric was planning to refinance the house after you married.”
My stomach dropped.
I turned toward my husband.
“Is that true?”
He finally looked at me.
“It was just an idea.”
“An idea you discussed with your mother?”
He said nothing.
That silence was enough.
I walked upstairs.
Opened my desk.
And pulled out the folder Vanessa had photographed.
Then I found something I had never noticed before.
A page was missing.
It was the original estate document from my grandmother.
The document that clearly stated the inheritance was to remain my separate property.
I searched everywhere.
Nothing.
Then I remembered the security footage.
Vanessa had taken photographs of that folder.
But she had also removed something.
I called my attorney again.
“Can you send me another certified copy of my grandmother’s estate documents?”
“Of course.”
“Today.”
He paused.
“Why?”
“Because the original is missing.”
There was silence.
Then he said:
“Don’t confront anyone yet.”
Too late.
I already knew who had taken it.
That evening, I checked Vanessa’s suitcase while she was downstairs.
And inside the smallest side pocket, beneath a stack of folded clothes, I found the missing document.
But that wasn’t the only thing.
There was also a handwritten note.
I unfolded it.
And my blood ran cold.
It wasn’t written by Vanessa.
It was written by Eric.
The note contained one sentence:
Once she signs the refinance papers, the house will finally belong to us.
I stood there staring at my husband’s handwriting.
Suddenly, everything made sense.
The questions.
The photographs.
The missing document.
The sudden interest in the deed.
Vanessa hadn’t been acting alone.
My husband had been planning to take the house from me.
And now I had proof.
But what they didn’t know was that my grandmother had left one final protection in her will.
A clause neither Eric nor Vanessa had ever seen.
And when my attorney explained what that clause meant, I realized they hadn’t just made a terrible mistake.
They had put themselves in a position where I could legally force both of them out of the house.
Permanently.
