THE SECRET ETHAN LEFT BEHIND

THE SECRET ETHAN LEFT BEHIND

PART 2

Nobody moved.

For several seconds, the only sound was the wind moving through the purple wisteria above the gate.

Thomas stared at Noah as though he were looking at a ghost.

Diane’s lips trembled.

“Ethan is dead,” she whispered.

“I know,” Emily replied.

Thomas stepped closer.

“You’re telling me that boy is Ethan Mercer’s son?”

Emily nodded.

“Yes.”

Noah looked between them.

“Mom, who is Ethan?”

Emily gently squeezed his shoulder.

“He was your father.”

Noah’s eyes widened.

“But you always said you couldn’t tell me who he was.”

“I couldn’t.”

“Why?”

Emily looked directly at Thomas.

“Because I made a promise.”

Thomas’s face hardened.

“What promise?”

Emily reached into her handbag and pulled out a small black envelope.

“Ethan gave me this three days before he died.”

Thomas immediately recognized the handwriting on the front.

His expression changed.

“What does that say?”

Emily held the envelope tightly.

“Your name.”

Diane stepped forward.

“Emily, please.”

“No, Mom.”

Emily’s voice remained calm.

“You let Dad throw me out ten years ago because I refused to give up my baby.”

Diane’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was afraid.”

“I was nineteen.”

“I know.”

“I had nowhere to go.”

“I know.”

“And you still closed the gate.”

Diane covered her mouth.

Thomas looked away.

Emily continued.

“You both believed Ethan was some irresponsible young man who had gotten me pregnant.”

Thomas snapped,

“He disappeared!”

“He didn’t disappear.”

Emily opened the envelope.

“He was trying to reach you.”

She removed several folded documents.

“The day before he died, Ethan discovered something about our family.”

Thomas’s face went pale.

“What?”

Emily handed him the first document.

It was an old property transfer.

Dated twenty-seven years earlier.

Thomas stared at it.

“This isn’t possible.”

Emily shook her head.

“It is.”

Diane looked over his shoulder.

Then suddenly sat down on the porch step.

“Oh my God.”

Noah watched them silently.

“What does it mean?”

Emily crouched beside him.

“It means Grandpa has been hiding something from us.”

Thomas looked furious.

“Don’t involve him in this.”

“He deserves the truth.”

Then Emily handed him another document.

This one was a bank statement.

Large transfers.

Repeated payments.

All going to the same private account.

Thomas’s hands began shaking.

Diane whispered,

“Where did Ethan get those?”

“He found them while investigating your old business records.”

Thomas stared at Emily.

“Why would he investigate me?”

“Because he discovered that the company you claimed had failed was never actually bankrupt.”

Silence.

Emily continued.

“You moved the money.”

Thomas said nothing.

“You transferred it into another company.”

Diane began crying.

Emily looked at her.

“And Mom knew.”

Diane closed her eyes.

“I didn’t know everything.”

“You knew enough.”

Thomas finally exploded.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about!”

Emily didn’t flinch.

“I have Ethan’s recordings.”

That sentence silenced him.

Thomas stared at her.

“What recordings?”

Emily pulled out her phone.

“Everything Ethan discovered before he died.”

She pressed play.

A young man’s voice filled the porch.

Thomas immediately recognized it.

“If you’re hearing this, something happened to me.”

Diane began sobbing.

Ethan continued.

“Emily doesn’t know the whole truth yet. Her father has been hiding money for years. But that’s not the worst part.”

Thomas’s breathing became heavier.

Ethan’s voice continued.

“There’s another person involved.”

Emily looked at her mother.

Diane’s face had gone completely white.

The recording stopped.

Noah looked confused.

“Mom, who else was involved?”

Emily didn’t answer immediately.

She looked at her parents.

Then she said quietly,

“Grandma.”

Diane froze.

“What?”

Emily pulled out one final photograph.

It showed Diane standing beside Ethan’s father.

Taken twenty-eight years earlier.

Thomas stared at the photograph.

Then his knees nearly gave out.

Because he knew the man standing beside Diane.

And he knew exactly why Ethan had been investigating him.

Emily stepped closer.

“Ethan discovered that you and his father knew each other long before I ever met him.”

Thomas whispered,

“You don’t understand.”

“I understand enough.”

Emily turned toward Noah.

“Come on.”

But before they could leave, Thomas grabbed the doorframe.

“Emily, wait.”

She stopped.

He looked at Noah.

Then back at his daughter.

“There is something Ethan never found.”

Emily slowly turned around.

Thomas’s voice broke.

“The reason I threw you out wasn’t because I hated the pregnancy.”

Emily stared at him.

“Then why?”

Thomas looked toward Diane.

She was crying silently.

Finally, he whispered:

“Because if you stayed in this house, they would have killed you too.”

Emily’s blood ran cold.

Noah’s hand tightened around hers.

And suddenly, the question wasn’t why her parents had abandoned her.

It was who had been trying to silence her family for the last ten years.
