THE SECRET BENEATH GRANDFATHER’S SHED

THE SECRET BENEATH GRANDFATHER’S SHED

PART 2

Detective Claire Bennett stood at the bottom of the narrow staircase, her flashlight trembling slightly as she swept the beam across the underground room.

Nobody spoke.

The air smelled damp and stale.

Then her light stopped.

There was a small wooden chair in the corner.

Beside it sat an old metal table covered with photographs, notebooks, and newspaper clippings.

Claire stepped closer.

One photograph showed Lily.

She looked sixteen.

Alive.

Sitting in that very room.

Noah covered his mouth.

“That’s her.”

Margaret collapsed against the wall.

“My baby…”

Claire carefully picked up the photograph.

On the back was a date.

Three days after Lily had supposedly disappeared.

That meant Lily had not run away.

Someone had brought her here.

The detective opened the brown notebook they had found upstairs.

Most of the pages contained dates and short handwritten notes.

But one entry made everyone freeze.

“She still refuses to tell them where she came from.”

Claire turned another page.

“Her mother keeps searching. She must never discover the room.”

Noah stared at the writing.

“Who wrote this?”

Claire didn’t answer immediately.

Then she pointed toward the final page.

A name had been written there.

Harold Carter.

Noah felt sick.

His grandfather had known.

He had known what happened to Lily for fifteen years.

But the worst discovery was still waiting.

Behind the wooden table was a second door.

Claire ordered the officers to open it.

The door creaked slowly.

Beyond it was a tiny bedroom.

A bed.

A blanket.

A cup.

And on the wall…

Hundreds of small white flowers had been drawn with pencil.

Margaret began sobbing.

“She used to draw those when she was frightened.”

Noah walked toward the wall.

Then he noticed something underneath the drawings.

Words.

Written repeatedly in faint pencil.

“Noah will find me.”

His knees nearly gave out.

“She knew I would come.”

Claire immediately ordered the room photographed.

Then one officer shouted from the opposite corner.

“Detective!”

Everyone turned.

He was holding a small cassette recorder.

Claire pressed the play button.

Static filled the room.

Then a young girl’s voice came through.

Noah recognized it instantly.

“Mom… if you’re hearing this, I’m sorry.”

Margaret screamed.

“Lily!”

The recording continued.

“I didn’t disappear because I wanted to leave.”

A pause.

“I was told that if I ever tried to escape, Noah would be hurt.”

Noah’s blood ran cold.

Then Lily said something that changed everything.

“Grandpa isn’t the person who took me.”

The recording stopped.

Claire stared at the machine.

“What?”

The officer rewound it.

The final words played again.

“Grandpa isn’t the person who took me.”

Then came another voice.

An older man’s voice.

Harold.

“Lily, you need to understand. I’m protecting you from him.”

The recording ended.

Everyone looked at one another.

Noah whispered,

“From who?”

Claire looked at Margaret.

But Margaret’s face had already changed.

She was staring at the photograph on the table.

At first, nobody understood why.

Then she whispered one name.

“Daniel.”

Noah turned toward his father.

His father stood completely motionless.

Claire immediately stepped between them.

“Mr. Carter, where were you the night Lily disappeared?”

Daniel’s face went white.

“I told the police fifteen years ago.”

“I know what you told them,” Claire replied. “I’m asking you now.”

Daniel looked at Margaret.

Then at Noah.

Finally, he lowered his eyes.

“I wasn’t on the streets searching for her that night.”

The room became silent.

Noah stared at him.

“Then where were you?”

Daniel slowly reached into his coat.

He pulled out an old photograph.

“I was here.”

He held it toward Claire.

The photograph showed Harold’s house.

And standing beside the shed was Daniel.

But that wasn’t what terrified Noah.

In the background, barely visible through the doorway…

was Lily.

Alive.

And standing beside her was a woman none of them recognized.

Claire took the photograph.

Then her phone rang.

She listened for several seconds.

Her expression changed completely.

“What happened?” Noah asked.

Claire slowly lowered the phone.

“The forensic team found fresh fingerprints inside the underground room.”

Noah’s heart stopped.

“Fresh?”

Claire nodded.

“Someone has been using this place recently.”

Then they heard something from upstairs.

Three slow knocks.

Everyone froze.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

Claire raised her hand, signaling everyone to remain silent.

The sound came again.

But this time, it wasn’t coming from upstairs.

It was coming from behind the wall.

Noah stared at the underground bedroom.

There was another hidden door.

And from the other side came a woman’s trembling voice.

“Please…”

Margaret stepped forward.

The voice spoke again.

“I’ve been waiting fifteen years.”

Noah’s entire body went numb.

Because he knew that voice.

It was Lily.
