HIS DEAD MOTHER LEFT ONE FINAL SECRET
PART 2
Julian stared at the sealed envelope.
His hands were shaking.
“Where is Mom’s original will?”
I looked at him calmly.
“Exactly where she wanted it.”
He reached for the envelope.
I stopped him.
“Not yet.”
His eyes narrowed.
“You’ve been waiting for this?”
“For one hundred days.”
Chloe stepped forward.
“This is ridiculous. Eleanor is dead. Whatever she wrote doesn’t change anything.”
I turned toward her.
“You should be careful about speaking for a woman you barely knew.”
Chloe’s face tightened.
Julian looked at me.
“What happened to my mother?”
“You already know what happened.”
“I don’t.”
“You stopped answering her calls.”
His expression changed.
“She called you too?”
“Every day.”
I opened my phone and showed him the call records.
Hundreds of unanswered calls from Eleanor.
Then I played the final voicemail.
Her weak voice filled the room.
“Julian, if you’re listening to this, please come home. Your wife has been wonderful to me. She is the only person who stayed.”
Julian closed his eyes.
I continued.
“She knows everything about you. She knows where you’ve been. She knows about the child.”
Chloe suddenly stepped backward.
Julian looked at her.
“What does that mean?”
I placed another document on the table.
A private investigator’s report.
Canadian hotel records.
Bank transfers.
Photographs.
Three years of evidence.
Julian hadn’t been building a business in Canada.
He had been living with Chloe.
And Eleanor had discovered it.
But the worst part wasn’t the affair.
It was the money.
Julian had been secretly transferring money from his mother’s accounts to finance his new life.
He had taken nearly $400,000.
Chloe stared at the documents.
“You said that money was yours.”
Julian didn’t answer.
I smiled sadly.
“That was the secret your mother discovered.”
Julian picked up the envelope.
This time, I let him open it.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
He read the first few lines.
Then his knees weakened.
“What did she write?”
I didn’t answer.
He continued reading.
His face slowly crumbled.
Finally, he whispered,
“She knew.”
“She knew everything.”
The letter stated that Eleanor had changed her will shortly before her death.
The Queens house was no longer Julian’s.
The investment accounts were no longer Julian’s.
The family trust was no longer Julian’s.
Everything had been transferred into my name.
Julian stared at me.
“Why?”
I finally answered.
“Because your mother knew who actually took care of her.”
He shook his head.
“No. Mom would never do that.”
I pointed toward the final paragraph.
“She did.”
He read it aloud.
“If my son returns after abandoning his wife and stealing from me, he is to receive nothing until every dollar is repaid.”
Julian’s face went completely white.
Then he reached the final line.
His mother had written:
“Elena is my daughter now. Protect her. Give her the home. And never allow Julian to take it from her.”
Silence filled the room.
Chloe suddenly grabbed her designer luggage.
“We’re leaving.”
Julian turned toward her.
“Where?”
She froze.
He looked at the baby in her arms.
Then at the documents.
Then at me.
For the first time in three years, Julian looked completely lost.
“Where am I supposed to go?”
I picked up the divorce papers.
“That’s no longer my problem.”
He stared at me.
“But you’re my wife.”
I shook my head.
“Not anymore.”
I placed the signed papers in front of him.
“You gave me ten thousand dollars and told me to start over.”
I smiled.
“So I did.”
Julian looked toward his mother’s portrait.
His eyes filled with tears.
“I should have come home.”
“Yes,” I said quietly.
“You should have.”
Then I walked toward the front door.
Behind me, Julian whispered,
“Elena…”
I stopped.
“I was wrong.”
I looked back.
He was sitting beneath his mother’s portrait, surrounded by the life he had tried to replace.
“I know,” I said.
Then I left him there.
Because Eleanor had spent her final one hundred days making sure her son could never destroy me again.
And the house he thought he was returning to…
had never belonged to him in the first place.
