MY DAUGHTER RETURNED WITH A NEWBORN AND SAID, “YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT YOUR HUSBAND.” THEN SHE REVEALED THE TRUTH

PART 2 — MY DAUGHTER RETURNED WITH A NEWBORN AND SAID, “YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT YOUR HUSBAND.” THEN SHE REVEALED THE TRUTH

Sophie stepped inside and immediately locked the front door.

She kept looking through the window toward the driveway.

“Mom, we don’t have much time.”

I stared at the baby in her arms.

“Who is the father?”

Sophie didn’t answer.

Instead, she walked toward the kitchen table and carefully placed a small hospital bag beside her.

Then she looked at me.

“Before I tell you anything, promise me you won’t call Adrian.”

I felt my stomach tighten.

“I promise.”

Sophie took a deep breath.

“Dad didn’t throw me out because he was tired of supporting me.”

I sat down.

“Then why?”

“Because I found something.”

“What?”

She reached inside the hospital bag and pulled out a small black notebook.

“I found this in Dad’s office.”

I recognized Adrian’s handwriting immediately.

Sophie opened it to a page filled with dates, names, and amounts of money.

“What am I looking at?”

“Payments.”

“To whom?”

She pointed to several names.

“People who worked with Dad.”

Then she turned another page.

My face went cold.

My own name was written there.

Beside it was a date from eighteen months earlier.

“What is this?”

Sophie whispered:

“That’s when Dad started planning to get rid of you.”

I shook my head.

“No. That doesn’t make sense.”

“He knew you were going to discover what he had been doing.”

“What was he doing?”

Sophie looked down at the baby.

Then she said:

“Mom, Dad has been stealing money from your company.”

My heart stopped.

“What company?”

“The one you thought belonged entirely to him.”

I stared at her.

Adrian had always told me his consulting business was his.

He handled everything.

The finances.

The contracts.

The investments.

I had trusted him completely.

Sophie continued.

“He wasn’t just stealing money. He was transferring it into accounts you don’t know about.”

“Why would he do that?”

“Because he was preparing to disappear.”

The room suddenly felt unbearably quiet.

I looked at the baby.

“Then what does this have to do with your child?”

Sophie hesitated.

Then she reached into the bag again.

This time she pulled out a folded document.

A hospital birth certificate.

I read the name.

Then looked at Sophie.

“Why didn’t you tell me you were pregnant?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because Dad already knew.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“He knew?”

Sophie nodded.

“He found out before I did.”

“That’s impossible.”

“No, Mom.”

She wiped her eyes.

“That’s why he wanted me out of the house.”

I stood.

“Why?”

Sophie looked directly at me.

“Because the baby’s father is the reason Dad was afraid you’d find the truth.”

My heart began pounding.

“Who is he?”

Sophie slowly shook her head.

“You already know him.”

Before I could ask another question, headlights appeared through the front window.

Sophie froze.

I turned toward the driveway.

Adrian’s car was pulling in.

Sophie grabbed my arm.

“Mom, listen to me.”

Her voice trembled.

“If Dad finds out I’m here, he’ll know I told you everything.”

The front door handle suddenly moved.

Someone was trying to open it.

Sophie pulled the baby closer.

Then she whispered the sentence that made every piece of the puzzle fall into place:

“Mom… the baby’s father is Adrian’s business partner—and Dad has been paying him to keep a secret about you.”

The lock clicked.

Adrian was home.

And he had no idea that his daughter had just returned with the one piece of evidence that could destroy everything he’d spent years hiding.
