The Secret My Father Had Kept for Eighteen Years

PART 2 — The Secret My Father Had Kept for Eighteen Years

Marcus froze beside my hospital bed.

Vanessa stood behind him, clutching the edge of her wedding veil, her face drained of color.

Then the man in the doorway stepped forward.

My father.

For eighteen years, he had been the one person I could always trust.

He looked at Marcus with an expression I’d never seen before.

“Enough,” Dad said.

Marcus swallowed. “You knew?”

Dad didn’t answer.

He walked toward the bassinet and looked down at my daughter.

Then he turned to me.

“Simone, there’s something you need to know.”

My heart began pounding.

Marcus shook his head. “Don’t.”

Dad ignored him.

“The reason Marcus signed those divorce papers so quickly wasn’t because he didn’t care.”

I stared at him.

“What are you talking about?”

Dad pulled a folded envelope from inside his coat.

“I found this six months ago. I should have told you sooner.”

Marcus stepped forward.

“Give me that.”

Dad held it tighter.

“You don’t get to decide what she knows anymore.”

Vanessa suddenly started crying.

I looked from one face to another.

“What is in that envelope?”

Dad handed it to me.

Inside was a photograph.

I recognized the place immediately.

It was the fertility clinic Marcus and I had secretly visited during our marriage.

But the date on the photograph was impossible.

It was taken two weeks before Marcus filed for divorce.

My hands trembled.

“Why would you have this?”

Dad’s voice cracked.

“Because I paid for the test.”

Marcus closed his eyes.

And then Vanessa whispered something that made the entire room go silent.

“The baby isn’t the only secret.”

I looked at her.

“What did you just say?”

She slowly removed her wedding ring.

Then she placed it on the hospital table.

“I never wanted to marry Marcus.”

Marcus turned toward her in disbelief.

“Vanessa…”

She looked at me with tears running down her face.

“He promised me you’d never find out.”

My father’s expression hardened.

“Find out what?”

Vanessa looked directly at Marcus.

“That the divorce was never supposed to happen.”

My blood ran cold.

Marcus finally broke down.

“I was trying to protect you, Simone.”

“From what?”

He stared at my newborn daughter.

“From my family.”

Then Dad opened the envelope again and pulled out one final document.

The name at the bottom wasn’t Marcus Calloway’s.

It was mine.

And beneath it were three words that changed everything:

PATERNITY RESULTS: POSITIVE.

But the shocking part wasn’t that Marcus was the father.

It was who had ordered the test… and why.
