The Truth Her Father Came Back For

The Truth Her Father Came Back For

I stared at Trevon.

“You have no right to come back after eighteen years and demand anything from me.”

He looked past me at Mikayla.

“I know.”

Mikayla stood frozen in the hallway.

“Mom… what is he talking about?”

My heart sank.

Trevon slowly stepped inside.

“I didn’t come here to take you away from your mother.”

Mikayla looked at him.

“Then why are you here?”

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a worn envelope.

“Because there are things your mother never told you.”

I immediately knew what was inside.

“Don’t.”

Trevon looked at me.

“You promised yourself you’d tell her when she was old enough.”

“I was protecting her.”

“From me?”

“From what happened.”

Mikayla’s voice broke.

“What happened?”

I looked at my daughter.

Eighteen years of sacrifice suddenly felt like they were collapsing around me.

Then Trevon placed the envelope on the table.

“Your mother was told I abandoned you.”

I stared at him.

“You did.”

He shook his head.

“No. My father made me leave.”

Mikayla’s eyes widened.

“What?”

Trevon pulled out an old photograph.

It showed him standing beside a hospital bed.

A newborn baby was in his arms.

My daughter.

Mikayla covered her mouth.

“I was there the day you were born,” he whispered.

My hands began shaking.

“You lied to me.”

Trevon looked at me sadly.

“I was seventeen too. My father threatened to destroy your family if I came back.”

He opened the envelope.

Inside were eighteen birthday cards.

One for every year of Mikayla’s life.

None had ever been delivered.

“I wrote these for her every birthday.”

Mikayla began crying.

“Why didn’t you send them?”

Trevon looked at me.

“Because your mother deserved the choice.”

I couldn’t answer.

Then Mikayla noticed something written on the back of the final card.

She turned it over.

Her face suddenly changed.

“Mom…”

“What?”

She handed it to me.

There was one sentence written beneath the date.

Your grandfather has been searching for you for eighteen years.

And beneath that was an address.

Mikayla looked at Trevon.

“Why would he want to find me now?”

Trevon went completely silent.

Then he said the words that made my blood run cold.

“Because he’s dying.”

He paused.

“And before he dies, he wants to tell you what really happened the night I disappeared.”
