She Knew My Husband
She took one step back.
Then another.
“Why are you asking about him?”
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
I stared at her.
“Because his tattoo is your face.”
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she looked down at the floor.
“Oh my God.”
My heart started pounding.
“You know him.”
She slowly nodded.
“I knew him.”
That answer somehow frightened me more.
“Did you date him?”
She shook her head.
“Not exactly.”
“What does that mean?”
She looked toward the bakery entrance as if she was checking whether someone had followed me.
Then she lowered her voice.
“Your husband never told you about me?”
“No.”
She closed her eyes.
“He promised me he would.”
I felt my stomach drop.
“Promised you what?”
She looked directly at me.
“That he would never let you find out.”
My hands went cold.
She told me her name was Elena.
Then she explained that she had known my husband almost fifteen years before we met.
They weren’t strangers.
They weren’t simply friends.
They had been engaged.
But that wasn’t even the part that shocked me most.
Elena reached into her purse and pulled out an old photograph.
She placed it on the table between us.
It showed my husband standing beside her.
He was younger.
Smiling.
And his arm was wrapped around her waist.
On her left hand was a diamond ring.
I stared at the photograph.
“When was this taken?”
“Three months before he met you.”
I couldn’t breathe.
“But he told me he didn’t know you.”
“I know.”
“Why is your face tattooed on his shoulder?”
Elena’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because I died.”
I stared at her.
“What?”
She quickly shook her head.
“Not literally.”
She took a shaky breath.
“Your husband was told I was dead.”
Then she told me what happened.
Fifteen years earlier, Elena had disappeared after a serious accident.
Her family had been told she wouldn’t survive.
My husband believed she had died.
He was devastated.
A few months later, he got her portrait tattooed on his shoulder.
But Elena survived.
She spent years recovering and eventually moved away.
When she returned to town, she tried to find him.
By then, he was married.
To me.
I couldn’t stop staring at her.
“Then why did he tell me the tattoo was a random picture?”
Elena looked at me sadly.
“Because he eventually found me.”
My blood ran cold.
“When?”
“Six years ago.”
Six years.
Half of my marriage.
“And he never told me?”
She shook her head.
“He asked me to stay away.”
I thought about every excuse.
Every time he refused to explain the tattoo.
Every time he promised to cover it.
Then Elena said something that made everything suddenly make sense.
“He wasn’t afraid you’d discover who I was.”
She paused.
“He was afraid you’d discover why he kept the tattoo.”
I felt my heart sink.
“Why?”
Elena reached into her purse again.
This time, she pulled out a small envelope.
She slid it across the table.
“My husband gave me this the day he found out your husband was married.”
I stared at the envelope.
My name was written across the front.
Not Elena’s.
Mine.
And underneath my name were four words:
“You deserve the truth.”
I looked up at her.
“What is inside?”
Elena swallowed.
“Everything he never told you.”
