PART 2 — THE WOMAN THEY THOUGHT THEY COULD HUMILIATE
I took my daughter by the hand and walked out of the lobby.
I didn’t look back.
Not even once.
My daughter was unusually quiet.
For the first time that day, she wasn’t talking about the paper necklace she’d made for her father.
She held it in both hands.
“Mommy…”
“Yes, sweetheart?”
“Does Daddy not want to see us?”
That question nearly broke me.
I knelt beside her.
“None of this is your fault.”
“But why is another lady calling Daddy her husband?”
I didn’t have an answer I could give a six-year-old.
Not yet.
I hugged her.
Then my phone vibrated.
My brother.
TRANSFER COMPLETE.
A second message appeared.
All Sterling-backed credit facilities frozen.
Then another.
Board meeting scheduled for 8:00 a.m. tomorrow.
I stared at the screen.
My daughter looked up.
“Mommy?”
I forced a smile.
“Let’s go home.”
But I didn’t go home.
I drove straight to my family’s private office.
My brothers were already waiting.
Daniel stood beside the conference table with his arms crossed.
“Tell me exactly what happened.”
I explained everything.
The gala.
The secretary.
The other woman.
The son.
The way Chloe had humiliated me in front of everyone.
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“She called another woman his wife?”
I nodded.
“And she said security should remove you?”
“Yes.”
My youngest brother, Marcus, quietly opened his laptop.
“Then we need to look at what Dominic has been hiding.”
He pulled up the company’s financial records.
For years, Dominic had told me his business was thriving.
It wasn’t.
It had been surviving because my family had kept rescuing it.
Emergency loans.
Private investments.
Credit guarantees.
Supplier agreements.
All of it.
And there was something else.
Marcus turned the screen toward me.
“Look at these payments.”
I stared at the entries.
Luxury hotel.
Jewelry store.
Private apartment.
High-end restaurant.
All paid through company accounts.
Then I saw a recurring name.
Chloe Bennett.
My stomach tightened.
“How long?”
“Almost eighteen months.”
I closed my eyes.
Eighteen months.
While I had been raising our daughter.
While I had been defending him to my family.
While he had been telling me he was working late.
Marcus opened another file.
“There’s more.”
A photograph appeared on the screen.
Dominic.
Chloe.
And a little boy.
They were standing outside a private school.
The boy looked about eight.
My heart stopped.
“That’s his son,” Daniel said quietly.
I looked at him.
“You knew?”
“No.”
“Then who is the boy’s mother?”
Marcus zoomed in on another document.
The name at the top made my hands go cold.
Chloe Bennett — Domestic Partnership Records.
I stared at the screen.
Then something clicked.
The secretary hadn’t simply made a mistake.
She hadn’t accidentally called Chloe his wife.
She had been telling the truth.
Dominic had built an entire second life.
And somehow, almost everyone around him knew about it.
Except me.
Then my phone rang.
It was the gala organizer.
I answered.
“Mrs. Sterling?”
“Yes?”
“I think you need to know something.”
My heart started pounding.
“What?”
“There was a reason Dominic wanted you kept away from the gala tonight.”
I stood up.
“What reason?”
The man hesitated.
Then he whispered:
“Your husband was supposed to announce his engagement tonight.”
Silence.
My daughter was sitting across the room, quietly coloring.
“Engagement to Chloe?”
“Yes.”
I felt something inside me go completely still.
Then the man added:
“And he was planning to introduce her son as his heir.”
I ended the call.
Daniel looked at me.
“What are you going to do?”
I looked down at the paper necklace my daughter had made.
She had carefully written:
DADDY
across the middle.
I folded it gently.
Then I placed it inside my purse.
“I was going to surprise my husband tonight.”
I looked at my brothers.
“Now I’m going to surprise him tomorrow.”
Marcus smiled.
“Do you want us to destroy the company?”
I shook my head.
“No.”
I picked up the folder containing every loan, investment, and guarantee my family had ever provided.
“I want him to understand exactly how close he came to losing everything.”
Then I looked at the clock.
“Because tomorrow morning, Dominic is going to walk into his boardroom believing he’s the CEO.”
I smiled for the first time that night.
“And he’s going to walk out realizing he never owned the company at all.”
But what none of us knew yet…
was that Dominic had one final secret.
And when we discovered who the little boy’s real father was—
everything changed.
