It’s Time You Learned Who Your Husband Really Was Part 2:

Part 2:

My breath caught as Grace stepped closer, the object in her hands finally coming into full view.

It was a small, worn notebook.

The kind David used to carry years ago before everything became digital. Before secrets had to be hidden more carefully.

“He told me to give you this,” she said, her voice trembling. “But only after he was gone… because he knew you wouldn’t believe him otherwise.”

I stood slowly, my legs unsteady.

“What is this?” I whispered.

Grace swallowed. “The truth.”

For a moment, I didn’t move.

Then I reached out and took the notebook.

It felt heavier than it should have.

Inside, the first page was filled with David’s handwriting.

Familiar.

Careful.

Shaking.

“If you are reading this,” it began, “then I no longer have the chance to protect you myself.”

My heart started pounding.

I flipped to the next page.

Dates.

Names.

Places I didn’t recognize.

And then—

My name.

Over and over again.

“What is this, Grace?” I asked, my voice barely holding together.

Tears filled her eyes. “He wasn’t hiding me from you,” she said. “He was hiding you from them.”

The room spun slightly.

“From who?”

She hesitated.

Then she said it.

“My family.”

I stared at her. “Your family?”

Grace nodded slowly. “They’re not just… normal people. They’re dangerous. And David—your husband—used to be part of it.”

My chest tightened.

“No,” I said immediately. “That’s not possible. David was—he was kind. He was gentle—”

“He was trying to be,” Grace interrupted softly. “But that wasn’t always who he was.”

Silence filled the room.

I looked back down at the notebook.

Page after page of records.

Transfers.

Addresses.

Warnings.

And then a line that made my hands go cold.

“They will come for her when I’m gone.”

I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

“What does that mean?” I whispered.

Grace stepped closer.

“It means,” she said carefully, “your husband spent the last fifteen years making sure they couldn’t find you.”

Every memory I had of David suddenly felt… different.

The way he checked the locks every night.

The way he discouraged certain trips.

The quiet tension in his eyes when unknown numbers called.

“I thought he was just… careful,” I said weakly.

“He was scared,” Grace replied. “For you.”

I shook my head, trying to make sense of it. “Then why bring you here? Why now?”

Her expression broke.

“Because they already found me.”

The words hit like a shock.

“He knew they would use me to get to him,” she continued. “And when he got sick… he realized he wouldn’t be able to stop them anymore.”

I felt the ground slipping beneath me.

“So he brought you here… to protect you?” I asked.

“And to warn you,” she said.

A cold silence settled between us.

I looked again at the notebook, flipping to the last page.

A final message.

Short.

Clear.

“Trust Grace. Don’t trust anyone else.”

My hands trembled.

“I don’t understand,” I said. “Why didn’t he tell me any of this?”

Grace’s eyes filled with tears again.

“Because if you knew,” she said softly, “you wouldn’t have been safe.”

The room felt smaller now.

Heavier.

Like everything I thought I knew had shifted just slightly out of place.

“Grace…” I whispered. “What exactly did your family do?”

She didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, she walked to the window and pulled the curtain back just enough to look outside.

When she turned back to me, her face had gone pale.

“They don’t just take money,” she said quietly.

My heart started racing.

“What do you mean?”

Her voice dropped to almost nothing.

“They take people.”

A chill ran through my entire body.

Before I could respond—

Headlights swept across the window.

Both of us froze.

A car had just pulled up outside the house.

Grace grabbed my arm.

“They’re here.”

The notebook slipped slightly in my hands as my pulse thundered in my ears.

For the first time since David died—

I understood the fear I had seen in his eyes.

And I realized something far worse than grief was waiting for me.
