THE MAN THREE TABLES AWAY — PART 2
The room went completely silent.
Not the uncomfortable silence that follows an argument.
A deeper silence.
The kind that happens when three hundred people suddenly realize they are watching something they were never supposed to see.
Samantha stared at the paper in my hand.
“No,” she whispered.
I didn’t move.
She looked at Eric.
Then back at me.
“What are you talking about?”
David calmly placed another document on the table.
“The laboratory report is conclusive,” he said.
Samantha’s hands began to shake.
“You’re lying.”
I looked directly at her.
“I wish I were.”
Eric finally stepped forward.
“What is this?”
I turned toward him.
“You’ve been lying to me for months, Eric. But you weren’t the only one.”
His face tightened.
“What does that mean?”
I nodded toward the three tables behind him.
“Look.”
Everyone turned.
A man in a dark suit stood slowly.
His name was Michael.
Samantha’s former fiancé.
The man she had publicly claimed was “too boring” and left two years earlier.
Her face turned completely white.
Michael didn’t look surprised.
He looked heartbroken.
Samantha took one step backward.
“No…”
Michael’s voice was quiet.
“You told me the baby was Eric’s.”
The room erupted in whispers.
Eric turned toward Samantha.
“You were with him too?”
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
I watched my husband realize that the woman he had betrayed me with had apparently been keeping secrets from him as well.
Then David opened the folder again.
“There is one more thing,” he said.
He placed several photographs on the table.
Hotel records.
Bank transfers.
Text messages.
And photographs showing Samantha meeting Michael repeatedly during the same period she had been seeing Eric.
Eric picked up one of the photographs.
His hands began trembling.
“You told me I was the father.”
Samantha started crying.
“I thought you were.”
“You thought?”
His voice echoed across the room.
“You announced my child in front of three hundred people!”
Samantha looked at me.
“You planned this.”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
“You knew?”
“For four months.”
She stared at me as if she couldn’t understand.
“Then why didn’t you stop me?”
I smiled sadly.
“Because I wanted everyone to hear the truth from your own mouth.”
My mother began crying.
My father looked completely devastated.
But I wasn’t interested in humiliating Samantha.
I had already spent four months deciding what I would do when this moment arrived.
I turned toward Eric.
“You betrayed me.”
He lowered his eyes.
“You lied to me.”
He said nothing.
“And you helped destroy something I spent ten years building.”
Then I placed one final document in front of him.
His eyes moved across the page.
His face changed.
“What is this?”
“Our divorce agreement.”
He looked at me.
“You already filed?”
“Four months ago.”
The room fell silent again.
“I knew this marriage was over the moment I saw those photographs.”
Eric’s voice cracked.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I wanted one night where you couldn’t lie your way out of it.”
I picked up my glass of champagne.
“To ten years,” I said quietly.
“Not because they were perfect.”
“But because they taught me exactly who I never want beside me again.”
Then I turned toward Samantha.
She was crying uncontrollably.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
I believed she meant it.
But forgiveness didn’t mean forgetting.
And it certainly didn’t mean returning to the life she had helped destroy.
I walked toward the exit.
Behind me, I heard Eric calling my name.
I didn’t turn around.
For ten years, I had been afraid of what would happen if I walked away.
That night, I finally discovered something.
Sometimes walking away isn’t losing.
Sometimes it’s the first time you finally win.
