THE DOCUMENTS DANIEL NEVER KNEW EXISTED

PART 2 — THE DOCUMENTS DANIEL NEVER KNEW EXISTED

For the next three weeks, I said almost nothing.

Daniel moved into his downtown apartment with Paige.

He posted photographs from restaurants.

Weekend trips.

Champagne.

Smiling selfies.

They looked happy.

Perfect, even.

And every time Sophie came home from spending time with her father, she would tell me the same thing.

“Daddy says Paige is going to be my new mommy.”

I never corrected her.

I simply hugged my daughter and said,

“You only ever need to remember that you are loved.”

Meanwhile, Helena and Mina were digging through the financial records.

And what they found was worse than I expected.

Daniel hadn’t simply decided he wanted a divorce.

He had been preparing for it.

For almost eight months.

There were emails between Daniel and Paige.

Hotel reservations.

Private messages.

Financial spreadsheets.

And then we found the Mercer Ridge documents.

I stared at the screen.

“That’s not his company,” I said.

Helena nodded.

“No.”

“Then why is his name on these documents?”

“Because someone wanted lenders to believe he had an ownership interest.”

I felt cold.

“Who?”

Helena turned her laptop toward me.

The signature on the supporting letter belonged to Paige.

My best friend.

She had helped Daniel create documents suggesting he was entitled to money he didn’t actually own.

But there was something even more disturbing.

The supposed investment wasn’t real.

Mercer Ridge was a shell entity.

And money had been moving through it.

From Daniel.

To Paige.

Then back to accounts controlled by Daniel.

They had been transferring money between themselves and disguising it as investment activity.

They weren’t building a new life.

They were hiding debts.

And they needed my divorce settlement to keep the entire scheme from collapsing.

Suddenly, Daniel’s urgency made sense.

He needed the house sold.

He needed me to sign quickly.

He needed me to walk away believing he had simply fallen out of love.

And most importantly…

He needed me not to look closely at the numbers.

I looked at Helena.

“What happens if I don’t sign?”

She smiled slightly.

“Then he has a problem.”

Three days later, Daniel called me.

“Belle, we need to finalize this.”

“I thought you wanted a clean divorce.”

“I do.”

“Then why are you rushing?”

He sighed.

“Because Paige and I are trying to move forward.”

I almost laughed.

“Congratulations.”

“Thank you.”

There was a pause.

Then he said,

“You’ve always been reasonable.”

That sentence told me everything.

He still thought I was the woman who stayed quiet because she didn’t understand what was happening.

I agreed to meet him.

At the mediator’s office, Daniel arrived with Paige.

She wouldn’t look directly at me.

The mediator placed the documents on the table.

Daniel pointed toward the settlement.

“Once Belle signs, we can sell the house and divide everything.”

I looked at the pages.

Then I looked at him.

“Is that everything?”

“Yes.”

“Are you sure?”

“Absolutely.”

I signed.

Daniel exhaled.

Paige smiled.

They thought they had won.

But there was one thing Daniel didn’t know.

The settlement only covered the assets he had disclosed.

The financial investigation was still open.

And Helena had already sent the evidence to the appropriate authorities.

Two months passed.

Daniel and Paige married.

They rented a luxury apartment downtown.

They even sent Sophie a photograph from their wedding.

Then, one Monday morning, my phone rang.

It was Helena.

“Belle, it’s happening.”

“What?”

“Daniel has been contacted by investigators.”

I sat down.

“Why?”

“Because the lenders discovered the forged documentation.”

My heart began pounding.

“What about Paige?”

“She is being questioned too.”

That afternoon, Daniel called me.

His voice sounded nothing like the confident man who had buttered toast while ending our marriage.

“Belle, we need to talk.”

“About what?”

“You knew.”

I said nothing.

“You knew how much you made.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about Northline.”

“Yes.”

“And you never told me?”

“You never asked.”

Silence.

Then his voice became angry.

“You let me believe you didn’t have a career!”

“No, Daniel.”

I paused.

“You decided I didn’t have one.”

He stopped breathing for a moment.

“You made that decision because you saw me cooking breakfast and taking Sophie to school.”

“You thought my life was small because I didn’t advertise it.”

His voice cracked.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

I looked out the window.

“Because every time I tried to talk about my work, you called it a hobby.”

He had nothing to say.

Then I heard him whisper,

“Paige knew.”

“Yes.”

“She knew everything?”

“She knew enough.”

Another silence.

Then he asked,

“How much did you make last year?”

“Over five hundred thousand.”

His breathing changed.

I could almost hear the number hitting him.

But the income wasn’t what destroyed his new life.

It was the documents.

The hidden accounts.

The fabricated investment.

The money transfers.

And the fact that Paige had helped him create the illusion that he was financially secure.

Daniel had divorced me because he thought I had nothing.

Then he married the person who helped him hide what he actually had.

And now both of them were facing the consequences.

A few weeks later, Daniel came to my house.

He looked exhausted.

“I made the biggest mistake of my life,” he said.

I stood behind the doorway.

“Yes.”

“Can we start over?”

I shook my head.

“You didn’t leave because you stopped loving me.”

He looked down.

“You left because you thought you could trade me for something better.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“And now you know what I was worth.”

He nodded.

“I do.”

I closed the door gently.

Because I had finally learned something too.

My worth had never been determined by my salary.

It had been there the entire time.

Daniel simply wasn’t paying attention.
