PART 2 — The Secret Behind That Door
For a few seconds, I couldn’t breathe.
I stood frozen in the hallway, staring through the narrow opening in Teresa’s bedroom door.
The storm outside was still raging, but somehow, all I could hear was my own heartbeat.
Then the man’s voice came again.
“Adrián, you can’t keep hiding this from her.”
My entire body went cold.
Adrián.
My husband was in there.
With my mother-in-law.
And another man.
I pushed the door open just enough to see inside.
Teresa was sitting on the edge of her bed, her face buried in her hands.
Adrián stood beside the window.
And across from him was a man I had never seen before.
He looked to be in his late fifties, wearing a dark rain-soaked jacket. His face was tense, and there was something strangely familiar about his eyes.
The moment Adrián noticed me standing in the doorway, the color disappeared from his face.
“Mariana…”
He said my name like someone who had just been caught doing something unforgivable.
I looked from him to Teresa.
Then to the stranger.
“Who is he?”
Nobody answered.
My voice became louder.
“Adrián, I asked you who this man is.”
The stranger slowly looked at me.
And then he said something that made my stomach drop.
“You deserve to know the truth.”
Adrián immediately stepped toward him.
“No.”
The man shook his head.
“It’s gone too far.”
Teresa suddenly stood up.
“Please,” she whispered. “Not tonight.”
I stared at her.
For three years, I had wondered why she treated me like a stranger.
Why she barely spoke to me.
Why she always seemed uncomfortable whenever Adrián and I were together.
And suddenly, I realized she knew something.
Something enormous.
Something that had been hidden from me since the day I entered this house.
I looked at Adrián.
“Tell me.”
He didn’t move.
“Tell me right now.”
His eyes filled with tears.
And for the first time in three years, my husband looked genuinely terrified.
“Mariana, I wanted to tell you.”
“When?”
He lowered his head.
“I don’t know.”
I laughed bitterly.
“You’ve had three years.”
The stranger stepped forward.
“My name is Rafael.”
I stared at him.
“I don’t know you.”
“No,” he said quietly. “But you knew my name once.”
I felt a strange chill run through me.
“What does that mean?”
Rafael looked at Teresa.
Then back at me.
“I was married to her.”
I couldn’t understand what I was hearing.
Teresa closed her eyes.
My mother-in-law had been a widow for years.
At least, that’s what Adrián had always told me.
“You said your husband died,” I whispered.
Teresa began crying.
“He didn’t die.”
The room seemed to spin.
“What?”
Rafael’s voice broke.
“I disappeared.”
I looked at Adrián.
He was crying now.
“Why?”
Nobody answered.
Then Rafael said the words that shattered everything I thought I knew about my husband.
“Because Adrián was not the only person Teresa was protecting.”
I felt my knees weaken.
“Protecting him from what?”
Rafael looked directly into my eyes.
“From me.”
I didn’t understand.
And then Teresa finally spoke.
“Rafael is Adrián’s father.”
Silence.
Complete silence.
I stared at the man.
Then at my husband.
Then back at Teresa.
Adrián’s father?
But I had been told his father died when he was a child.
Adrián had never talked about him.
Not once.
Not even on our wedding day.
“Why did you lie to me?” I whispered.
Teresa wiped her tears.
“Because I was afraid.”
“Afraid of what?”
She looked at Rafael.
Then at Adrián.
And finally at me.
“Because twenty-eight years ago, Rafael did something terrible.”
Rafael’s face hardened.
“I made mistakes.”
“You nearly destroyed this family,” Teresa replied.
I looked at Adrián.
“And you knew?”
He nodded.
“I knew who my father was.”
My heart sank.
“And you knew he was alive?”
Another nod.
I stepped backward.
“Then why did you marry me?”
Adrián looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.
“Because I loved you.”
“Don’t say that.”
“I did.”
“Then why haven’t you touched me in three years?”
His face crumpled.
That question had haunted me for three years.
And now I finally had my answer.
Adrián took a deep breath.
“Because I was afraid I would become like him.”
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
He looked toward Rafael.
“My father hurt my mother.”
Teresa began sobbing.
Adrián continued.
“I grew up watching what happened between them. I promised myself I’d never become that kind of man.”
“But you weren’t even like him,” I whispered.
“I know.”
“Then why punish me?”
“I wasn’t punishing you.”
His voice cracked.
“I was fighting myself.”
He told me that after we married, he became terrified of intimacy.
Every time I reached for him, memories of his childhood came rushing back.
He was afraid that if he allowed himself to become vulnerable, he would somehow repeat his father’s mistakes.
So he created distance.
He thought if he kept me away, he could protect me.
But instead, he slowly broke my heart.
I felt tears running down my face.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I was ashamed.”
For the first time, I understood that the coldness I had mistaken for rejection wasn’t because I wasn’t beautiful enough.
It wasn’t because he didn’t love me.
It was because he had been carrying a secret wound he never knew how to explain.
But there was still one question burning inside me.
“Then why did Rafael come back tonight?”
Everyone became silent again.
Rafael looked at Teresa.
Then at Adrián.
Finally, he looked at me.
“Because I didn’t come back for Teresa.”
My heart stopped.
“Then why?”
He reached inside his jacket and pulled out an old envelope.
He handed it to me.
“My daughter asked me to find you.”
I stared at the envelope.
“My daughter?”
Rafael nodded.
“She died six months ago.”
I couldn’t speak.
“What does she have to do with me?”
His eyes filled with tears.
“Everything.”
My hands began trembling as I opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
And the moment I saw the woman in that picture, I nearly dropped it.
Because I recognized her.
She was someone I had met years before my wedding.
Someone whose name I had completely forgotten.
And written on the back of the photograph were six words that made me realize this secret was much bigger than my marriage.
“Mariana, you were supposed to know.”
I looked at Adrián.
He had gone completely pale.
“What’s in that photograph?” I whispered.
He didn’t answer.
And that’s when I realized something terrifying.
Adrián wasn’t shocked because he didn’t know the woman.
He was shocked because he knew exactly who she was.
And whatever she had left behind…
could destroy everything we had spent three years trying to protect.
