The Man They Thought They Could Control

PART 2 — The Man They Thought They Could Control

Ethan didn’t call his mother.

Not yet.

Instead, he sat in the dark kitchen and replayed the security footage.

Again.

And again.

Every time Diane said, “Claire can cry all she wants,” something inside him tightened.

But the sentence that hurt most came afterward.

Brooke had laughed.

“She’ll never tell him.”

Jason answered, “She knows what happens when Ethan gets angry with Mom.”

Then Diane said something Ethan never expected to hear.

“He’ll come around. He always does.”

Ethan stared at the screen.

For years, he had believed his family was simply protective of him.

Now he understood something painful.

They didn’t protect him.

They controlled him.

And they had apparently been doing it to Claire while he was away.

He opened the emergency credit card account.

The first transaction made his stomach turn.

$3,800 at a luxury resort in Cancún.

Then another.

$1,200 at a jewelry store.

Then $740 at a designer boutique.

Then $460 at a seafood restaurant.

Ethan checked the date.

All of it had happened after he transferred the $9,000 to his mother.

Money he had specifically given her to care for Claire and Lily.

His hands became completely still.

He called the credit-card company.

“I need to freeze the card immediately.”

The representative confirmed it.

“Do you want to dispute the recent transactions?”

Ethan looked toward the bedroom where Claire was sleeping.

“Yes.”

Every single one.

Then he opened his banking app.

The $9,000 transfer was gone.

He checked the transaction history.

Diane had withdrawn cash.

Paid hotel bills.

Bought airline tickets.

And transferred another $2,000 to Brooke.

None of it had gone toward Claire.

Not one dollar.

Ethan took a deep breath.

Then his phone rang.

Diane.

He answered.

“Ethan!”

Her voice was cheerful.

“We’re having such a wonderful time! You wouldn’t believe the view from our room.”

He said nothing.

“Are you still working?”

“No.”

A pause.

“I came home.”

Silence.

Then Diane laughed nervously.

“Oh, sweetheart, you should have told us.”

“I wanted to surprise you.”

Another silence.

“Where’s Claire?” Ethan asked.

“She must be sleeping.”

“She was eating dry noodles.”

His mother’s voice immediately changed.

“She exaggerates.”

“She had nothing else to eat.”

“Well, she could have ordered something.”

“With what?”

Diane didn’t answer.

Ethan looked at the credit-card charges on his screen.

“With the money you spent in Cancún?”

His mother went completely silent.

Then she said:

“You’re misunderstanding everything.”

“No.”

Ethan’s voice remained calm.

“For the first time, I’m understanding everything.”

Brooke suddenly came onto the phone.

“Ethan, don’t make this into some huge family drama.”

He almost laughed.

“Family drama?”

“Yes. Mom has done everything for you.”

“Did she?”

“Of course.”

“Then why did she leave my wife and eleven-day-old daughter alone without food?”

Brooke didn’t answer.

“Why did she take the blanket?”

Nothing.

“Why did she spend $9,000 on a vacation?”

Jason’s voice could be heard in the background.

“Tell him we didn’t know the card was for Claire.”

Ethan heard it.

And that was enough.

“You knew.”

Nobody spoke.

Ethan ended the call.

But he wasn’t finished.

He opened the security footage again.

This time, he watched something he hadn’t noticed earlier.

Before Diane left, she walked into Claire’s bedroom.

She opened the closet.

Then she removed a small envelope from the top shelf.

Ethan leaned closer to the screen.

He knew that envelope.

It contained the medical records from Claire’s surgery.

But Diane hadn’t simply taken the records.

She had also taken something else.

Claire’s passport.

Ethan’s blood ran cold.

Why would his mother need Claire’s passport?

He immediately woke Claire.

“Claire.”

She opened her eyes.

“What happened?”

“Where’s your passport?”

Her expression changed.

“I don’t know.”

“Think carefully.”

Claire sat up slowly.

“It was in the bedroom.”

Ethan showed her the security footage.

Claire covered her mouth.

“I didn’t know she took it.”

Ethan called the police.

But before he could explain everything, his phone received a message.

From Diane.

It contained only one sentence.

“If you involve the police, you’ll regret what happens next.”

Ethan stared at the message.

Then another arrived.

“You don’t know what Claire has been hiding from you.”

He looked at his wife.

Claire’s face had gone completely white.

“Ethan…”

“What?”

She started crying.

“There is something I never told you.”

He sat beside her.

“What is it?”

Claire looked toward the sleeping baby.

Then she whispered:

“Your mother didn’t just take my passport.”

Ethan waited.

“She took a letter.”

“What letter?”

Claire wiped her tears.

“The one I received three weeks before Lily was born.”

“What did it say?”

Claire looked directly into his eyes.

“It said that Lily wasn’t safe around your family.”

Ethan felt the room go silent.

“Who sent it?”

Claire shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

“Claire.”

“I was afraid.”

“Afraid of what?”

She reached beneath her pillow and pulled out a folded photograph.

“I kept a copy.”

Ethan took it.

His face changed instantly.

The photograph showed Diane holding Lily in the hospital.

But standing behind her was a man Ethan had never seen before.

And on the back of the photograph were five handwritten words:

“Ask your mother who he is.”

Ethan stared at the picture.

Then his phone rang again.

This time, the caller ID made his heart stop.

It was Diane.

But when he answered, he didn’t hear his mother’s voice.

A man’s voice whispered:

“Ethan, don’t trust your mother.”

Then the line went dead.

And for the first time that night, Ethan realized the Cancún trip wasn’t the real secret.

It was only the beginning.
