PART 2 — The Truth About Lily’s Face Finally Came Out
Ryan stayed on his knees in the rain, his shoulders shaking.
I had never seen my husband look so terrified.
“What are you talking about?” I asked.
He covered his face with both hands.
Then he looked at me and whispered, “Lily isn’t the reason I changed.”
“Then what is?”
He stared at the little house behind him.
“My mother lives there.”
I froze.
His mother had supposedly died when Ryan was nineteen.
At least, that was what he had always told me.
“What?”
“She didn’t die,” he said. “She disappeared.”
I couldn’t understand.
“Why would you lie to me about your own mother?”
Ryan wiped the rain from his face.
“Because I was ashamed.”
He told me that when he was a child, his mother had suffered from a severe illness. One night, she disappeared from their home, and his father told everyone she had died.
But she hadn’t.
She had been placed in a long-term care facility because her condition had become impossible for the family to manage.
Ryan had spent years believing she was gone.
Until, shortly before Lily was born, he received a letter.
His mother was alive.
And she had been asking about him.
“I came here every night because I couldn’t tell you,” he said. “I was afraid you’d look at me differently.”
“But why did you look at Lily like that?”
Ryan’s face crumpled.
“Because when I first saw her, I saw my mother.”
He pulled a photograph from his jacket.
It showed a young woman with dark hair and delicate features.
I stared at the photograph.
Then at the image of Lily in my mind.
The resemblance was unmistakable.
“The same eyes,” Ryan whispered. “The same little crease between her eyebrows. For one second, I thought I was looking at my mother when she was young.”
I finally understood why he had been so shaken.
But there was still something that didn’t make sense.
“If you loved your mother enough to visit her every night, why didn’t you tell me?”
He looked away.
“Because there was something else.”
My heart sank.
“What?”
Ryan took a deep breath.
“The house isn’t just where my mother lives.”
He pointed toward the front door.
“She has been keeping something for me for thirty-five years.”
Before I could ask what it was, the door slowly opened.
An elderly woman appeared in the doorway.
She looked at Ryan.
Then at me.
And finally at Lily, who was sleeping in my arms.
Her face went completely pale.
“Oh my God,” she whispered.
Ryan stepped toward her.
“Mom?”
She didn’t answer.
Instead, she stared at Lily and began crying.
Then she whispered words that made my blood run cold.
“She has the same birthmark.”
I looked down at my daughter.
A tiny mark near her shoulder.
I’d always thought it was nothing.
Ryan’s mother reached for my hand.
“I’ve been waiting thirty-five years to see her.”
I pulled my hand away.
“See who?”
She looked directly at me.
“Your daughter.”
Then she glanced at Ryan.
“And now you both need to know why I was forced to disappear.”
That was when I realized Ryan’s late-night trips hadn’t been about betrayal.
He had been searching for answers about his family.
But the biggest secret hadn’t been revealed yet.
Because Ryan’s mother knew something about Lily’s birth that neither of us had ever been told.
And when she finally said the words, my entire world changed.
“The doctors weren’t supposed to let you leave that hospital with her.”
