PART 2 — The Secret Sarah Had Been Carrying for an Entire Year
Sarah closed the front door behind her and immediately checked the driveway.
“Is Kevin home?”
“No,” I whispered. “He’s at work. Sarah, please sit down. Tell me what happened.”
She looked at the baby sleeping peacefully in her arms.
Then she looked at me.
“Mom, I didn’t come back because I wanted forgiveness.”
My heart sank.
“Then why did you come back?”
She swallowed.
“Because I finally found the courage to tell you what Kevin did.”
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“What are you talking about?”
Sarah placed the baby carefully in the bassinet beside the sofa.
Then she reached inside her worn coat and pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept this for a year.”
I opened it.
Inside were photographs, copies of text messages, and a folded document.
The first photograph showed Sarah standing outside our house on the night Kevin had thrown her out.
The timestamp was exactly the night I had been away.
My hands began shaking.
“I thought Kevin told you I left willingly,” Sarah said.
I nodded slowly.
“He told me you were angry and wanted independence.”
Sarah laughed bitterly.
“He lied.”
She showed me the next photograph.
It was a picture of a storage box.
Inside were documents bearing Kevin’s name.
“What are these?” I asked.
“Read the dates.”
I did.
My stomach twisted.
For months before I left on that business trip, Kevin had been secretly transferring money from an account I didn’t know existed.
Money from our joint savings.
Money I’d spent years helping him save.
“Why would he do that?”
Sarah stared at me.
“Because he was planning to leave you.”
I couldn’t breathe.
“But why?”
Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because there was another woman.”
I sat down.
“Who?”
Sarah hesitated.
Then she whispered,
“Kevin’s business partner.”
I felt as though the room had disappeared around me.
But Sarah wasn’t finished.
“He wasn’t just planning to leave you. He wanted you to believe you had nothing.”
She pulled out another document.
It was a property transfer agreement.
My name had been removed from the paperwork for our vacation property.
Without my knowledge.
Without my signature.
I looked at Sarah.
“How did you get all of this?”
“I didn’t.”
She pointed toward the baby.
“The baby’s father did.”
I froze.
“What?”
Sarah took a deep breath.
“The reason I disappeared wasn’t because I didn’t love you.”
She looked down at her child.
“I was trying to protect myself.”
“From Kevin?”
She nodded.
“After he kicked me out, I stayed with someone who helped me.”
“Who?”
Sarah’s voice became barely audible.
“Kevin’s former accountant.”
My heart began pounding.
“He knew what Kevin had been doing. He had copies of everything.”
Then Sarah looked directly into my eyes.
“And Mom… there’s something else.”
“What?”
She reached into the envelope and pulled out one final photograph.
It showed Kevin standing outside a courthouse.
Beside him was the same woman Sarah had mentioned.
But they weren’t alone.
A little boy stood between them.
I stared at the photograph.
“Who’s that child?”
Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.
“That’s why I came back.”
She took my hand.
“Mom… that little boy is Kevin’s son.”
I couldn’t speak.
Then my phone suddenly rang.
Kevin.
Sarah grabbed my wrist.
“Don’t answer.”
But before I could silence it, a voicemail appeared.
I pressed play.
Kevin’s voice came through the speaker.
“Sarah… I know you’re there.”
My entire body went cold.
Then he said something that made Sarah cover her mouth.
“Your mother has no idea what happened the night I sent you away.”
And suddenly, I realized the truth Sarah had brought home wasn’t about an affair.
It was about why Kevin had been so desperate to get my daughter out of the house in the first place.
